Nocera Terinese combines historical landmarks with a distinctive landscape. The town lies on the slopes of Monte Reventino and offers a sweeping viewpoint over the Savuto Valley. The historic settlement is located where the valleys of the Grande and Rivale streams meet. This brings together different landscape features: the hillside setting, the valleys, and the view over the Savuto Valley.

Churches and Historic Architecture

In the Rione Motta, a medieval Doric-style tuff arch stands beside Santa Maria della Pietà. The bridge known as “La Ponta” connects the neighborhood to the rest of the historic center. Santa Maria della Pietà is considered the oldest church in Nocera Terinese and evidence that the first inhabited core of today’s town was located here. Another dated architectural detail is the 15th-century portal of Palazzo Procida.

At the Annunziata, a wooden sculpture and a green marble altar come together. A niche contains a Pietà dating from 1600: it depicts the Sorrowful Mother with the dead Christ on her lap. The central altar is made of green marble and is designated a national monument. The Chiesa di San Martino is a small, simple 15th-century church.

San Francesco also bears various traces of its history. The church formerly belonged to the Conventual Franciscans’ monastery and has Renaissance-style tuff altars. In 1955, the entire monastic complex was demolished; the church was left abandoned at the time. The Capuchin monastery is a separate site: it was built in 1581 on the remains of a Norman castle. Thus, the two monastic sites highlight different aspects: a former religious order affiliation and a foundation on older castle remains.

Ancient Traces and Landscape

In the locality of Piano della Tirena are protected ruins of the ancient city of Temesa, also known as Tempsa or Noukria. Piano della Tirena is described as an ancient Greco-Roman-Byzantine settlement. The site covers about 30 hectares and lies near the sea, between the Savuto to the north and the Grande to the south. The ruins and the landscape therefore represent a different historical and geographical focus from the churches in the historic center.

When choosing a destination based on your interests, Nocera Terinese can be considered through these different themes: its historic sites include medieval and Renaissance architecture, traces of an older settlement, and religious art. The landscape, meanwhile, extends from the slopes of Monte Reventino to the viewpoint over the Savuto Valley.

Traditions and Calabrian Produce

The Vattienti ritual takes place on Holy Saturday during the procession of the Sorrowful Mother and the dead Christ. Another seasonal tradition involves placing the Madonna at the foot of the altar in a simple wooden structure called a “Sipurcu” (tomb). Flowers and the so-called “piatti” surround her. The descriptions emphasize different aspects: the Vattienti ritual is linked to a procession, while the Sipurcu centers on the presentation of the Madonna.

Agricultural produce also contributes to the character of the town. Nocera Terinese is one of the main growing centers for Calabria’s Cipolla Rossa di Tropea IGP. The area around Nocera Terinese also produces acclaimed DOC wines from high-quality grape varieties. Onion growing and wine production thus add another regional dimension to the historical and landscape themes.
