Parenti: Forest Trails, Local History and Festivals
Accommodation in Parenti
There are different ways to explore Parenti, depending on your interests: forest trails near Bocca di Piazza, the history of the historic centre and recurring festivals each offer a different focus. The events calendar is especially useful when choosing when to visit; at the same time, the lanes, historic buildings and agricultural heritage offer specific themes for a stay.
Forest Trails and Historic Lanes
Near Bocca di Piazza, forest trails wind among centuries-old fir and beech trees. This offers a nature-focused experience alongside the stories of the town. Trails among the two types of trees provide a different focus from the historic sites in the centre.
In the historic centre, narrow concrete lanes known as “vinelle” lead to small squares and stairways, linking the lower and upper parts of town. Their layout illustrates how the centre is structured: the lanes connect the different areas, while small squares and stairways mark individual sections.
Church, Monument and Palazzo Bruni
The present-day historic centre lies where the new “presidi” began to take shape. Baron Luigi Ricciulli had his palace built in the highest part of town. The history of the Parrocchia della Madonna del Carmine also reaches far back: the earliest surviving records of it date to 1752. Its central altar is dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine.
The Monumento ai caduti di Parenti was inaugurated in Piazza Chiesa on 11 November 1924. Palazzo Bruni tells another chapter in the town’s history: the Bruni family donated the building to the municipality in 1936. It first housed the primary school and the municipal administration offices, and later became the municipal library. Its former uses give the building a place in both the educational and administrative history of the town.
Rural life is also represented by the Museo delle arti e mestieri contadini. It preserves old tools once used by local residents’ grandparents. Alongside the religious and municipal buildings, the museum offers a glimpse of everyday objects from earlier generations.
Potato Farming and Festivals Throughout the Year
Today, the districts of Parenti are almost entirely agricultural, and potatoes are grown there. The Sagra della Patata di Bocca di Piazza is one event associated with this crop. It takes place every year on the last Sunday in August in the district of Bocca di Piazza. Typical potato dishes prepared by local residents are served. The festival also includes a horse gathering with riding games, skill competitions and horse parades. The programme may vary from year to year, so check the latest date and programme before travelling.
Another date on the events calendar is the Gara del Carro. The race with wooden carts and ball bearings originated in Parenti in 1992 and takes place every year on the third Sunday in September, alongside the Festa di Santa Liberata. The two festivals have different places in the annual calendar: the Sagra falls on the last Sunday in August, while the Gara takes place on the third Sunday in September. If one of these events is the reason for your trip, comparing the dates can help you plan when to visit. Check the specific event dates before travelling.
Depending on your interests, you can explore different sides of Parenti: forest trails and tree species near Bocca di Piazza, historic sites and lanes in the centre, or late-summer festivals. The recorded dates also give the town’s historic milestones their own timeline—from the first records of the parish in 1752, to Palazzo Bruni’s donation in 1936, and the start of the Gara del Carro in 1992.
