San Nicola Arcella lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea in the heart of the Riviera dei Cedri. When choosing your destination, you’ll find a striking coastal landscape alongside themes from architectural and literary history. Arco Magno is a natural coastal formation; the Chiesa Madre di San Nicola da Tolentino is a church interior decorated with multicolored stucco in the historic center. Torre Crawford adds a literary connection to the town’s character. For your stay, you can weigh whether to focus mainly on coastal scenery or also explore architectural and literary history.

Coast and Arco Magno

Arco Magno is a natural limestone arch on the coast of San Nicola Arcella. It encloses a small beach and a cave with a freshwater spring. The combination of the rock arch and cave makes it an interesting natural formation; the beach and spring add specific landscape features. Arco Magno can be reached by a path or by small boats from the sea; seasonal restrictions may apply. Check the applicable access rules before your visit.

Views and local history

The Belvedere offers a different view of the coast: from there, you can see Arcomagno, the coastal cliffs and hidden coves. The Belvedere is easy to reach from the historic center. The two sites offer different perspectives on the landscape: at Arco Magno, the arch, beach, cave and spring take center stage; the Belvedere offers views of several coastal features. This distinction can help you decide which aspects of the destination’s coastline best suit your interests.

The Chiesa Madre di San Nicola da Tolentino is located in the historic center of San Nicola Arcella. Its interior is decorated with multicolored stucco and comprises a central nave and six symmetrical side chapels. A central nave is the main longitudinal space of a church; the chapels flank it in a symmetrical arrangement. At the church, you can observe both the colorful decoration and the layout of the interior. Its history begins in the 17th century with the “Cappella della Visitazione della Beata.” In the second half of the 19th century, the church was expanded, giving it its present appearance. Its origins as a chapel and its later expansion are two distinct stages in its architectural history.

Literature and the Crawford Festival

Torre Crawford originally served as a Saracen watchtower. Lord Francis Marion Crawford regularly stayed there and found inspiration for his stories. The tower’s history thus brings together its original function as a watchtower and its literary connection to Crawford. For travelers interested in cultural history, this connection complements the church’s architectural history with a different theme.

The Crawford Festival, a literature festival devoted to folk horror and fantasy, returned to San Nicola Arcella from May 27 to 29, 2026. The program for this edition included workshops, escape rooms, performances, entertainment and other activities for visitors of all ages. If you’d like to combine your trip with the festival, check the dates for the edition you’re interested in attending.
