Tarsia offers several starting points for planning your trip: the history of the Ferramonti concentration camp, historic buildings and nature at Lake Tarsia. If you are looking for a hotel in Tarsia, these highlights can help you shape your stay around your interests—from remembrance to a nature trail and seasonal wildlife watching.

Remembrance and history

The Museo della Memoria Ferramonti di Tarsia was established in 2004, following many years of work to restore the premises and conduct documentary research. It was created to preserve and share the historical legacy of the Ferramonti concentration camp. The collection includes documents, photographs, letters and personal belongings. A tour through restored former pavilions tells the story of the camp; the different items in the collection offer various ways into the subject.

The town's architectural history also spans different periods. The remains of a Norman castle stand on the edge of the settlement; farther north is a tower from the same period. In the Middle Ages, Tarsia was elevated to a county, making it one of only five counties in all of Calabria. The Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo dates from the 14th century. It houses numerous processional statues, including an expressive 19th-century statue of Saint Francis of Paola. The Church of Santa Maria del Seggio was built in the 16th century, and the Church of the Beata Vergine della Cintura in the 18th century. The history of the place of the same name also includes the Abbey of Santa Maria di Camigliano, founded in the 12th century by Benedictine Cistercians.

Nature at Lake Tarsia

The Centro Visitatori in the municipality's historic centre supports environmental education and the management of visitor flows associated with nature-based activities in protected areas. The Lake Tarsia Nature Reserve has a nature trail. It runs alongside an artificial canal that serves as a habitat for the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis). In spring and summer, you can watch the turtles basking in the sun there.

The nature trail starts at the equipped area in the hamlet of Pietra della Lavandaia in the municipality of Tarsia. It is rated as moderately difficult and is about 600 metres long. The trail's length and difficulty give you an idea of the route; opportunities to spot pond turtles, on the other hand, are seasonal. A diorama section in Tarsia also features the region's nature: one diorama is dedicated to the Lake Tarsia and Foce del Crati nature reserves.

Events and regional cuisine

Tarantarsia is a world music festival in Tarsia. During the event, young local volunteers take tourists and visitors on guided walks to discover the area's history. The festival also includes the food fair “Sapori e profumi della nostra terra”.

The programme for the 2026 edition of the Palio dei Borghi Normanni included a procession in medieval costumes from Piazza Seggio to Piazza San Francesco, folk games from that era and a performance by flag throwers. A sagra featuring typical dishes from Tarsia and Calabria was also announced as part of the Palio, including Capperi di Tarsia.

Consider whether Ferramonti and the town's architectural history, seasonal wildlife watching or a specific events programme is the main focus of your trip.
