Discover Belvedere Di Spinello
Accommodation in Belvedere Di Spinello
Belvedere Di Spinello brings together sacred buildings, local history and a rural setting. The town lies on the northern slope of Monte Castello and overlooks the confluence of the Lese and Neto rivers. If you are looking for a hotel in Belvedere Di Spinello, these highlights can help you plan your trip: the sanctuary, historic sites, agricultural landscapes and regional cuisine appeal to different interests.
The Santuario Madonna della Scala
The Madonna della Scala church was designated the diocesan sanctuary Santuario Madonna della Scala on April 10, 2023. The sanctuary is outside the town center to the north, on Strada Provinciale 30. The route takes you via the A3, the Cosenza exit, the SS 107 toward Crotone and the turnoff to Belvedere di Spinello. Check local directions before your visit.
A small bell tower rises above the façade. It is also decorated with two pilasters and a rose window; the portal is framed by two columns standing on plinths. The individual elements give the exterior a clear structure: the bell tower and pilasters sit alongside the details of the rose window and portal.
The sanctuary attracts many pilgrims, especially on Easter Monday and August 15, the Feast of the Assumption. A popular legend links the origins of the cult to an apparition of the Virgin Mary. The tradition also holds that the statue of Madonna della Scala could not be moved. There is also a hermitage in the Madonna della Scala area.
Churches and historic sites
The Chiesa della Santissima Trinità was built around 1700 and restored in the 19th century. The altar features a painting from the mid-18th century depicting the Holy Trinity. The painting therefore dates from a later period than the church’s construction and predates the 19th-century restoration; it adds a specific artistic reference to the building’s history.
The origins of Belvedere Spinello are linked to a castle on the eponymous Monte Castello. No structural traces of the castle remain. Another dated episode concerns the year 1077: during the conflict over Santa Severina, Roberto il Guiscardo fortified, among other places, the castle of Belvedere. The founding tradition and the medieval event thus offer different points of reference in the town’s history.
The hamlet of Timpa del Salto also brings together several historical themes. In 1844, a clash took place there between the Bandiera brothers and the town’s Bourbon troops. Ruins of a Byzantine rock monastery also survive in Timpa del Salto. Remains of a Roman villa are still being found in the hamlet of Pietrarizzo.
Rural surroundings and regional cuisine
The agricultural landscape around Belvedere Spinello includes olive groves, vineyards and orchards. Rural cuisine includes homemade pasta and legumes cooked over a fire in a “pignata.” These culinary traditions each have their own distinctive features: the pasta is characterized by its homemade preparation, while the legumes are defined by the traditional method of cooking them in a pot over a fire. Together with the agricultural landscape, these themes offer a glimpse into the town’s rural character.
Cycling in the Val di Neto
The Val di Neto Cycle Route follows an old mule track, now equipped with information boards and rest areas. The Ciclopedonale della Val di Neto connects six municipalities, including Belvedere di Spinello. These are two specific details to consider when planning a trip: one describes the route and its facilities, the other the connections between the municipalities.
