Capo Rizzuto combines a distinctive coastline with insights into marine life and a religious tradition governed by specific scheduling rules. Three questions can therefore help you plan your trip: Which coastal stretches define the area? What views of the sea do the aquarium and glass-bottom boat offer? And does the pilgrimage period suit your reason for visiting? The distinctions below can help you decide before looking for a hotel in Capo Rizzuto.

Distinguishing the Coast and Bays

Capo Colonna, Capo Cimiti, Capo Rizzuto and Le Castella extend into the sea as coastal headlands. They enclose extensive bays, whose beaches are mostly low-lying and sandy. One important exception is the stretch of coast between Capo Cimiti and Capo Rizzuto: there, the coastline runs mostly in a straight line. This means the shoreline does not have a uniform appearance, setting this stretch apart from the areas with extensive bays. The coastal description therefore cannot be applied indiscriminately to every stretch.

Aquarium and Marine Area

The CEAM Aquarium is located in the Capo Rizzuto district, in Piazza del Santuario della Madonna Greca. It has 22 tanks with a total capacity of about 20,000 litres. It showcases the flora and fauna of the marine protected area and also recreates its marine habitats. Together, these offerings describe both the nature of the protected area and the habitats recreated there. The aquarium also has an educational laboratory for children, focusing on marine biology and ecology. In a touch pool, visitors can touch marine life. The tanks, recreated habitats, laboratory and touch pool thus offer different ways to explore marine topics.

Visitors can also observe the seabed of the marine protected area from the water: the Aquavision glass-bottom boat lets them explore the seabed off Capo Rizzuto. The Gunny wreck is another point of interest. It sank in 1962 on the shoals off Capo Rizzuto and now lies at a depth of 24 metres. The year indicates when it sank, while the depth describes the wreck’s current location.

Pilgrimage and May Festival

The calendar is key for the pilgrimage on foot. It takes place every Saturday after 19 March until the May festival, from Isola to Capo Rizzuto. The Madonna Greca festival falls on the Monday after the first Sunday in May. The two traditional dates follow different rules: the pilgrimage takes place on Saturdays during a specified period, while the festival is held on a Monday whose date depends on the first Sunday in May. If you are planning a trip for a religious occasion, this distinction helps you tell the pilgrimage date from the festival day.

Finding a Hotel in Capo Rizzuto

The coastline, aquarium and marine protected area offer points of interest for a trip focused on landscapes and marine life. If you are visiting for the Madonna Greca, the dates provided can help you choose the period and festival day. Decide on your reason for visiting and the right travel period before looking for a hotel.
