Le Castella – Fortress, Coast and Marine Activities
Accommodation in Le Castella
Le Castella brings together the history of its fortress and a coastline that alternates between rocky sandstone headlands and sandy beaches of fossil and calcareous origin. At the heart of the Capo Rizzuto Marine Protected Area, activities on the water, underwater attractions and a museum complex are among the highlights of a stay. The history of the architecture and the natural environment of the marine area stand side by side, without reducing the different experiences to a single focus.
The Fortress and History of Le Castella
The Fortress of Le Castella stands on an island connected to the coast by a narrow strip of land. The complex acquired its present architectural form during Aragonese rule. Extensive renovation work was completed in 1487. This links a specific historical building phase to the form that defines the fortress today. The town’s name also points to an earlier period: the plural Le Castella is explained by the fact that there was once more than one fortification in the area.
Those interested in the town’s history will find two distinct points of connection here: the development of the fortress and the historical significance of its name. The fortress stands on an island site connected to the coast by the narrow strip of land. This geographical setting is a part of Le Castella’s story in its own right, while the work completed in 1487 provides a historical link to Aragonese rule.
Coast, Beach and Views of the Fortress
The coastline alternates between rocky sandstone headlands and sandy beaches of fossil and calcareous origin. Spiaggia Grande lies in front of the village of Le Castella, offering views of the Aragonese Fortress. The beach landscape and the view of the building are distinct yet easily combined impressions of the coast. The nature of the water is another feature of the beaches: the seabed off Le Castella is particularly shallow. If you are interested in the coast and sea while planning your trip, these landscape features can provide a focus alongside the cultural attractions.
Boat Trips and the Underwater World
The Capo Rizzuto Marine Protected Area offers glass-bottom boat trips as an activity for observing the seabed within the protected area. Aquavision offers these trips from April to October. During the school term, educational routes with activities in the village of Le Castella are also organised. As seasonal schedules may change, it is advisable to check the dates in advance.
The Le Castella tour includes a one-hour trip on a glass-bottom boat, a guided commentary on board and a swimming stop. The programme also includes a visit to a ceramics workshop, where the various stages of production are explained, as well as a tasting of local products at a shop on the village’s main street. Group or other participation requirements may apply, depending on the booking. The tour thus combines time on the water with craft and culinary stops in the village.
The protected area’s tour programme also offers dinghy excursions for seawatching, as well as dives to sunken wrecks or particularly beautiful marine areas. On the seabed in front of the Aragonese Castle at Le Castella lie a large shipwreck and, nearby, underwater statues depicting a Nativity scene. These specific underwater features add a historical and cultural dimension to the appeal of the marine landscape.
Museums and Other Perspectives
Pélagos – Museo del Mare is a museum complex near Le Castella devoted to the historical and natural significance of the area. A virtual reality experience simulates a 360-degree dive at an underwater archaeological site. The simulation offers a different way to explore underwater archaeology from the activities on the sea described above.
The Museo del Mare AMP Capo Rizzuto is located in Piazza Magellano in the Le Castella district of Isola di Capo Rizzuto. Visits are possible by prior reservation only. Check the reservation arrangements before your visit. The museum, coastal landscape and various activities related to the protected area can therefore be considered as separate elements of your trip planning.
