In Agnana Calabra, landscape features meet local history: mineral springs, a riverbed and erosion gorges sit alongside churches, mining and festivals. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can start by considering whether to plan your travel dates around the landscape or a festival.

Mineral Springs, Riverbed and Geology

At Junchi, there is a sulphur spring, two chloride springs and an iron-rich sulphur spring. The sulphur- and chloride-rich springs of Agnana are also part of a nature trail that crosses the entire area from north to south.

In the southwest, the Fiumara Novito touches and borders Agnana’s territory. Its riverbed is home to a variety of plants and rocks, including, above all, limestone and granite. Alongside the springs, the riverbed and its rock types are therefore central to the description of the landscape.

Erosion has carved gorges on Monte Schiavo, which can be crossed in summer. They illustrate the area’s geological development. If you include these gorges in your travel plans, summer is the relevant time to cross them.

Remains of an Anthracotherium were found near Vallone Luria. This animal is thought to have lived around 30 million years ago. The discovery shifts the focus from today’s landscape features to the area’s distant geological past.

The salsoiodic thermal baths are another mineral feature. They consist of two medieval pools made of fired bricks, which visitors can bathe in. If you plan to visit, please check current access arrangements in advance.

Churches, Coal and Rural Heritage

Agnana Calabra was established around 1343 near a monastery of Basilian monks on Monte Sant'Agnana. The history of the Church of San Basilio includes its destruction again by the hurricane of 23 January 1885 and its reconstruction in 1907.

The Church of San Basilio is accessed through the main entrance at Via Umberto I, SNC. The Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia is accessed through the main entrance at Via Umberto I, 76.

Agnana still has a number of derelict mills and oil mills; in particular, the Saitte are still intact. Mining is also part of the area’s history. The first train on the Napoli-Portici line ran on lignite from Agnana. Anthracite from the Agnana mines was used in 1882 to build the Roma-Frascati railway line. Lignite and anthracite represent two distinct historical connections with railways.

Agnana’s mining park includes several mine entrances. Some are considered accessible to visitors, while others have been bricked up. Check local conditions before entering a mining area.

Festivals and When to Visit

The Feast of San Basilio Magno takes place every year on 14 June. The Feast of Madonna della Misericordia takes place on 18 August and includes a procession, fireworks and the traditional Cavalluccio dance. During festivals in Agnana Calabra, stalls sell local sweets.

The festivals and gorges offer different seasonal highlights for planning a visit: the Feast of San Basilio falls on the same calendar date each year, while the gorges can be crossed in summer. If you are travelling specifically for a festival, check the date in advance.
