Bocale: Coast, Trails and Historical Traces
Accommodation in Bocale
Bocale combines the coast with a hilly hinterland. Sandy beaches and clear seas sit alongside citrus groves, vineyards and historical remains. When choosing your stay, you can therefore weigh different interests: the sea, trails through the landscape or the history of the place.
Coast, Hills and Trails
Bocale’s coastal features include a sandy beach and clear seas. The area is predominantly hilly; citrus groves and vineyards stretch down towards the sea. The landscape thus encompasses both the coast and agriculturally cultivated slopes. Bocale is also known for wine production. The vineyards and wine production are therefore among the aspects that help shape the character of the place.
Windsurfing is possible along the coast; the waters off Bocale also offer opportunities for snorkelling. These are two different ways to enjoy the sea: windsurfing focuses on moving across the water, while snorkelling offers a view beneath the surface. Check the local availability of windsurfing before your trip. For snorkelling, take local sea conditions into account.
Inland, numerous trails run through olive groves and forests, offering views of the Strait of Messina. This landscape is different from the open coast: the trails pass through areas of vegetation, while the views extend as far as the strait. If you enjoy walking, you can make these trails a focus of your trip planning.
Archaeological and Historical Traces
Coastal erosion has exposed a possible archaeological site of historical and natural interest in Bocale. The area also contains a necropolis dating from the Hellenistic period. These two features point to different aspects of the past: a possible site exposed by erosion and a burial ground from the Hellenistic era.
The Castello di Santo Niceto, also known as Castello di San Niceto or Motta Santo Niceto, is a Byzantine fortress. It was built in the first half of the 11th century at the summit of a rocky hill. The three names refer to the same fortress; its date of construction and hilltop location are two key features of its history and form.
The churches also tell of different historical periods. The Chiesa dei Santi Cosma e Damiano in Bocale was destroyed by the 1908 earthquake and rebuilt in 1930. The Chiesa della Confraternita del Leandro is of Byzantine origin and was fully operational by the second half of the 17th century at the latest. A marble sculpture of the Madonna and Child was venerated in the church.
Another notable structure is the Monumento al 38° Parallelo in Bocale. Its base is shaped like a truncated pyramid. Its sloping side features medallions depicting landmarks from six cities crossed by the 38th parallel: Reggio Calabria, Seoul, Smyrna, Athens, San Francisco and Córdoba. The Museo Civico Archeologico Antiquarium Leucopetra preserves archaeological finds from the area of Motta San Giovanni.
