Explore Condofuri through Gallicianò’s Greek-speaking culture and the landscape along the Fiumara Amendolea. Gallicianò is a village in the Amendolea Valley and is now a district of the municipality of Condofuri. It lies in the Greek-influenced area of Parco Nazionale dell’Aspromonte and overlooks the Fiumara Amendolea. Language, religious architecture, archaeological collections and a distinctive river landscape offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Gallicianò: Language and Cultural Heritage

Gallicianò preserves a tangible and intangible heritage rooted in Magna Graecia and passed down through symbols, language and music. The Chiesa di San Giovanni, dedicated to the village’s patron saint, stands in the main square, Platia Alimos. The Orthodox church Madonna di Grecia, also known as Panaghia tis Elladas, features Byzantine-inspired icons and ornaments characteristic of the Greek Orthodox tradition.

The Museo etnografico is dedicated to Anzel Bogasàri-Merianoù. The Casa della Musica, also known as Spiti ti Musikì, was designed as a space for research, experimentation and production of Greek Calabrian music and dance. While the museum’s dedication reflects a distinct cultural connection, the Casa is focused on music and dance. The Grecofona Library is also among the places worth visiting in Gallicianò.

Archaeology and Architecture in Amendolea

The Museo Archeologico “Vallata dell’Amendolea” is housed in Amendolea’s former primary school building, near the Castello dei Ruffo di Calabria. It displays archaeological finds from the municipality of Condofuri, including Greco-Roman tombs, so-called Capuchin tombs and a water drainage channel. These examples range from burial finds to a feature for water management. Museum visits are by prior reservation; plan ahead and confirm the conditions before you arrive.

The Castello dell’Amendolea offers a distinct architectural focus. It has a clearly identifiable entrance area and a rectangular Palacium Castri with high walls, arched windows and small towers. The castle also includes a tower chapel built in Norman times, with a small church featuring an apse. Its entrance faces south, in keeping with Byzantine tradition. Below the Castello lie the remains of the ancient village of Amendolea. If you plan to visit these remains, check local conditions beforehand.

Fiumara Amendolea and Itinerary Planning

The Fiumara Amendolea is considered the largest fiumara on the southern side of the Aspromonte. Its broad riverbed and the bends in the valley make it a defining feature of the landscape. For itinerary planning, the Sentiero dell’Inglese offers a specific reference point: its third stage runs from Amendolea via Gallicianò to Bova. The river landscape and the named route thus provide the focus and orientation for an excursion. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Amendolea can be reached via a turnoff from the provincial road at the “passerella sull’Amendolea.” Consider local road conditions for this access route as well.
