Locri
Accommodation in Locri
For a stay in Locri, you can focus on several things: archaeological sites, museums and sacred art, as well as the coast. The city and the archaeological area offer different starting points for planning your visit.
Archaeological Sites and Their History
Locri National Archaeological Park offers four visitor routes and is about 5 km from the present-day city of Locri. One route in the Pirettina area leads to the Greco-Roman theatre. This gives visitors a specific destination within the archaeological offering, where the building’s history and the site’s use can be considered together.
The Teatro di Locri Epizefiri dates from the 4th century BC and was substantially altered during the Roman period. During the Greek era, it was used both for theatrical performances and for assemblies. The setting itself is also distinctive: the theatre was built on the natural slope of a hill, with its cavea facing the sea. Its different phases of use make the theatre a useful reference point for distinguishing Greek and Roman history in the same building.
Visible features of the Sanctuary of MarasĂ include the temenos, altars and temple. The sanctuary was probably built around the middle of the 7th century BC. The temenos refers to the sacred precinct; it is part of the sanctuary described here, along with the altars and temple. The Sanctuary of Aphrodite is also part of the archaeological area of Locri Epizefiri.
Museums and Cultural Stops in Locri
The National Archaeological Museum of Locri presents the history and life of Locri during the Greek era. Its collections include hundreds of artefacts found during excavations. These include terracotta votive tablets, known as pinakes, dating from the 5th century BC. They provide a specific link to finds from Locri within the broader picture of the Greek era.
The Casino Macrì museum complex offers a different perspective, preserving evidence from the Roman and Late Antique periods. The complex includes buildings constructed on the remains of a private Roman bath complex. Alongside Greek themes, you can therefore include later periods and the architectural traces of a Roman bath in the cultural focus of your stay.
The Museo del Territorio in Palazzo Nieddu is in the centre of Locri and is part of the network of cultural sites in Locri Epizefiri National Archaeological Park. It documents the protohistoric period of the Locride and hosts permanent and temporary exhibitions. The ground floor displays grave goods from important necropolises in the Locride; on the first floor, one section is dedicated to private collecting. Its range of topics and exhibition floors make the museum a distinct stop alongside the National Museum’s focus on Greek history.
Locri’s historic sites also include Torre Moschetta, known as Casino Scaglione. It was the first home of Locri’s archaeological collection and housed the archaeologist Paolo Orsi. Sacred art is another theme to explore: the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Maestro houses paintings, sculptures and frescoes. The Museo dei Ragazzi, meanwhile, is designed as an educational tour for school-age visitors.
Planning for the City, Coast and Travel
Piazza Nosside commemorates Nosside, a poet from ancient Locri Epizefiri, with a monument. The annual Il Suono dell'Alba concert is also held there at sunrise. If you would like to combine your visit with this event, check the dates for the specific edition. This lets you connect the city’s historical themes with a recurring cultural event without assuming a particular event date.
The coast can provide another focus for your trip. Locri has equipped beaches along the Costa dei Gelsomini. For train travel, the station in the city centre is a useful point of reference: it connects Locri to other cities and towns in the region and across the country via the national rail network. Check current train services for your travel dates.
When looking for a hotel in Locri, you can weigh up your priorities: archaeological sites, museums and culture, arrival by train or the coast. The approximate distance between the present-day city and the national archaeological park is a helpful reference for planning. When comparing specific offers, check the listed locations and amenities to make sure your choice suits your travel priorities.
