Archaeological evidence in Pellaro

The Parco Archeologico di Pellaro preserves evidence of continuous settlement from the 6th century BC through the Late Imperial period. This time span makes the park a highlight for travelers who want to discover Pellaro for more than just watersports.

Excavations that began in 1975 uncovered two chamber tombs dating from the 2nd to 1st century BC. Later excavations revealed archaic burials, including two ash urns. These finds bring the area’s long history of settlement to life.

The park also includes a large paved basin associated with brickmaking. This brings an archaeological connection to brick production into view alongside the burials.

Nature and seasonal nesting

Punta Pellaro combines particularly valuable natural and landscape features, making the area exceptional. At the same time, the area is not currently subject to any formal protection measure. The Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) and the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nest at Punta Pellaro. Nesting conditions may vary seasonally.

Il Pellaro wine

Il Pellaro is a red IGT wine named after the Pellaro district south of Reggio Calabria, where sunny vineyards stretch across the landscape. Pellaro is one of the Calabrian areas where the wine is allowed to retain the IGT designation. The wine’s name connects the district with the regional IGT classification, adding a culinary dimension to the watersports and archaeology themes.
