Brognaturo can be explored through two themes: the landscape around Lake Lacina and its hiking trails, and sacred art and local traditions. If you’re looking for a hotel in Brognaturo, you can plan your stay around these interests: would you prefer a trail through woodland and streams, or would you like to explore church art, festival customs and crafts? The places, route details and dates below provide a concrete basis for making that decision.

Lake Lacina and Hiking Trails

Lake Lacina lies at an altitude of 986 metres and extends across the municipalities of Brognaturo, Cardinale and San Sostene. This artificial reservoir contains an important biodiversity area and helps preserve the native ecotypes of the region. The lake is also a reference point for the Sentiero Fantasma della Baronessa, with the lake serving as its scenic backdrop.

The Lacina–Ferdinandea hiking trail starts at Lacina on the SP 43 in Brognaturo. From Lacina, it is 13.5 kilometres long and takes about five hours. It follows an old mule track through wooded landscapes with numerous streams. With its length and approximate duration, you can plan the walk as a multi-hour activity. The Sentiero Fantasma della Baronessa circular trail starts and ends on the SP 43, which runs from Brognaturo towards Serravalle. While Lacina–Ferdinandea is defined by the old track, forests and streams, the Sentiero Fantasma focuses on Lake Lacina as its scenic backdrop.

Sacred Art and Architecture

Brognaturo’s parish church houses a 16th-century marble group depicting the Annunciation, by Giovan Battista Mazzolo. The Chiesa Matrice features a wooden sculpture of Saint Joseph with the Christ Child and the Immaculate Conception, created by Michele Amato in 1873. The materials and dates give you two concrete points of reference for understanding these works: 16th-century marble and a wooden sculpture from 1873. Palazzo Tiani also has a distinctive architectural detail: a rusticated granite arch forms the entrance and leads into an inner courtyard.

Festival Traditions and Crafts

The Feast of Madonna della Consolazione takes place on the first Sunday in September and on 5 February. During the festival period, on the night before the Thursday that precedes the start of the novena, so-called “focari”—bonfires—are lit in the streets of Brognaturo. The “vedute” form a sequence of theatrical images: they express the community’s religious devotion through depictions of graces received, culminating in the apotheosis, the glorification of the statue of Madonna della Consolazione. Brognaturo is also associated with pipe-making. Domenico Grenci is considered the foremost representative of this craft.

Regional Orientation

The present-day SS 110 state road runs near Brognaturo; it was formerly called “Strada di Monte Cucco e Monte Pecoraro”. The 84-kilometre route connects Bivio Angitola on the Tyrrhenian coast with Monasterace Marina on the Ionian coast. This route provides a geographical link between the two coasts and complements the local themes of the lake, hiking trails and cultural heritage.
