Filadelfia: Musical Tradition and Historic Urban Layout
Accommodation in Filadelfia
Filadelfia bears the municipal cultural designation “Città della musica” (“City of Music”)—a recognition of its musical past and band tradition. The town is also distinguished by its right-angled street plan, historic fountains and examples of religious art. This offers several themes to explore as you plan your trip: urban history, music and cultural heritage. Filadelfia lies in the hilly area of Piano della Gorna.
A Street Plan with a History
After the earthquake of 1783, Filadelfia was rebuilt, adopting the street plan of Philadelphia in the United States. The plan follows an orthogonal layout and is divided into four quadrants. Orthogonal means that the layout is arranged at right angles. The reorganization after the earthquake and the adopted plan are thus part of a shared urban history. This can be traced not only through individual buildings, but also through the layout of the town.
Fountains and Civic Architecture
The Fontana della Ficarazza, at the entrance to the town, has three spouts and three masks. The stone masks were recovered from the fountains of Castelmonardo, linking the fountain to the history of the former city. The Fontana del Ceramidu offers a different point of reference in time: Michele La Sorte built it in 1895 on commission from the municipal administration of Filadelfia. The two fountains therefore differ both in their design and in their histories.
Civic buildings also have distinctive features. Palazzo Quattrocchi is an important public building with a large clock. In the Santa Barbara district, the portal of an old palace bears a double emblem: a phoenix and an eagle. These details offer further examples of public architecture and historic design in Filadelfia.
Churches, Bells and Art
The Campana della Misericordia was cast in 1590 and is housed in the bell tower of the Chiesa di San Teodoro. The Chiesa di San Francesco di Paola houses a bell from 1613 that comes from Santa Maria del Corazzo. The two dates mark different points in time; for the second bell, its origin is also part of the object's history.
The Chiesa di Santa Barbara houses a wooden crucifix depicting Christ still alive. In the transept of the Chiesa del Carmine stands a statue by the same artist as a statue kept in Messina. The bells, crucifix and statue offer different ways to explore Filadelfia's religious art—from the origins of a historic object to the imagery of a depiction.
Music, Customs and Events
Filadelfia's cultural heritage also includes poems in the local dialect. The “cumprunta” is a religious rite of the town. Painting is another form of expression alongside music and religion: the fourth edition of the Estemporanea d'Arte Giovani di Filadelfia was open to participants aged 9 to 18. Its theme was the town's four historic church squares.
A traditional custom, the so-called “Ballo del Cammello,” is associated with the Feast of San Francesco di Paola on the first Sunday in August; large drums set the rhythm of the dance. The “Carnivaletto” is a traditional custom observed after the official Carnival celebrations have ended. The two names refer to different points in the festive calendar of Filadelfia.
A specific edition of the Sagra delle Zeppole also has a date attached: the third edition took place on August 4, 2026. It featured traditionally prepared zeppole as well as Ngargadhàti with salted anchovies. These dishes were part of the program for this edition; the date is therefore a useful reference if you are interested in events and local cuisine.
Castelmonardo in the Surrounding Area
Castelmonardo lies southeast of Filadelfia, on a hill. The ruins of the former city extend across three nearby hills. The Istituzione Comunale Castelmonardo promotes awareness and understanding of the archaeological and historical remains. No group visits are currently scheduled, but the institution accepts requests to arrange group visits. If you are planning such a visit, contact the institution in advance to discuss the options.
