Limbadi lies in the south of the Province of Vibo Valentia, at the foot of Monte Poro. The municipality is set in a hilly landscape between the pastures of the Monte Poro plateau and the Costa degli Dei; the plateau also extends into Limbadi’s territory. This landscape provides a regional setting for the varied impressions associated with historic sites, festivals and viewpoints.

Historic Routes and Architecture

Motta Filocastro is distinguished by narrow, winding lanes, iron balconies and granite portals. The lanes shape the character of the town, while the balconies and portals provide striking architectural details. The ancient Via Popilia also forms part of its historical context: Motta Filocastro lies along this old road. Count Roger had a castle with twelve towers built there—a historical account that underscores the town’s former importance.

Another glimpse into the area’s architectural history takes you to Corso Umberto I and the adjoining lane named after the Prince of Piedmont. Both are paved with lava stone brought from Mount Etna in the 1930s. The material and its origin give this street paving a distinctive regional connection. The Chiesa di San Pantaleone houses a relic of Saint Pantaleon in a small vial.

Festivals and Religious Traditions

For the Filocastrum Fest, the historic centre of Motta Filocastro is prepared for visitors. The medieval festival takes place in a town that has preserved its ancient urban layout. It features stalls run by traders and artisans, musical performances and a historical procession with around 80 participants. The festival thus brings together its historic setting and a programme of crafts, music and procession.

In Caroni, the Sagra dei Tagghjarini is an annual summer event devoted to tasting traditional pasta. Another festival, the Giornata del Contadino, recalls traditional occupations, old farming tools and recipes from simple rural cooking. The two festivals have different emphases: one centres on tasting a traditional pasta, while the other recalls rural work and everyday cuisine.

Two important festivals are celebrated in honour of Saint Pantaleon: the “festa du santu poveru” at the end of May and the more solemn “festa du santu riccu” in July. During the procession, some worshippers, known as “sparacari,” wear a hood made of thorny wild herbs that covers the head and upper body. They do so to fulfil a vow. Check the specific festival dates before travelling.

Views Around Monte Poro

Il Tocco in Motta Filocastro is a panoramic terrace overlooking the Piana di Gioia Tauro, the mountains of the Serre and Aspromonte, the Strait of Messina, parts of Sicily and Mount Etna. Caroni lies almost on the slopes of Monte Poro and looks towards the Serre and the Gulf of Gioia Tauro. The two descriptions of the views have different emphases: Il Tocco offers a broad panorama encompassing several named landscapes and places, while Caroni is described in terms of its outlook towards the Serre and the gulf.
