Maierato: Churches, History and Paths
Accommodation in Maierato
Get to know Maierato through its local history, churches and the paths in the surrounding area. A walk along its characteristic streets reveals stone houses, narrow lanes and viewpoints with panoramic views. The Valle del Mesima also offers routes for trekking, excursions and walks in nature. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on the historic townscape, walks or the area’s natural features.
Churches and local history
The Parrocchia di San Michele e San Nicola Maierato is in the heart of the town and preserves valuable works and evidence of popular religious devotion. The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Provvidenza has a different historical association: it stands on the site of the former Dominican monastery and is commonly known locally as “d' 'u Monasteri.” The first church is notable for what it preserves, while the second is also associated with the site of the former monastery.
The Chiesa di Maria Santissima Addolorata is also in the heart of the town center; its origins are thought to date to the 18th century. The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pietà was completed in 1822, thirty-nine years after the catastrophic earthquake. The churches thus offer different historical points of reference, from origins dated approximately to an exact year of completion.
The Fontana Vecchia also recalls the town’s early history. This drinking-water spring, which still exists today, lies near the Lupìa district. The first houses of what is now Maierato are said to have been built nearby. Here, a surviving spring and a cautiously worded account of the settlement’s beginnings come together.
Walks, routes and ruins
A walk along Maierato’s characteristic streets reveals stone houses, narrow lanes and viewpoints with panoramic views. To take in the townscape, a walk through the streets and lanes is the ideal choice. In the area around Maierato in the Valle del Mesima, routes are also suitable for trekking, excursions and walks in nature. A walk in town and routes through the surrounding countryside are therefore two different ways to explore the area.
Another historical point of interest is the medieval ruins of Rocca Angitola, also known as Rocca Niceforo. You can explore the ruins on foot; they also include the remains of the Castello. The site is located in the area between Maierato and Monterosso Calabro. Unlike the churches in the heart of the town center, this is a place where you encounter history on a walk among medieval remains.
Nature and local traditions
Lago dell’Angitola is an important resting place for birds migrating toward Northern Europe. The birds’ presence varies by season. If you are interested in migratory birds, the time of year is therefore a useful factor to consider when planning your trip. The lake offers a different way to experience nature than the routes in the Valle del Mesima: here the focus is on resting migratory birds, while there it is on trekking, excursions and walks on foot.
The Festa della Trebbiatura connects Maierato with its agricultural tradition. As part of the festival, an antique threshing machine is traditionally used to thresh grain on the Altopiano degli Scrisi in the municipality of Maierato. The seventh edition, held in August 2024, also celebrated the ancient grain Rosia from the Maierato plain. Threshing and Rosia represent two distinct aspects: a traditional process and a specific grain variety from the plain.
