Mirabella Eclano brings together several distinct cultural themes: the ancient city of Aeclanum, papier-mâché craftsmanship, sacred collections and the annual Trasporto del Carro. If you are looking for a hotel in Mirabella Eclano, these highlights can shape your travel plans—especially if you want to focus your stay on the area’s history or the September festival. The themes range from archaeological history and preserved art to a recurring ritual.

Ancient History and Papier-Mâché

The ancient city of Aeclanum was founded in the 3rd century BC in the Passo di Mirabella area. A later link to craftsmanship can be found at the Museo dei Misteri in cartapesta in the monumental San Francesco complex. The sculptures, made entirely of papier-mâché, are by Antonio Russo (1836–1914), an artist from Mirabella Eclano. In 1875, he donated them to the local community.

At the museum, visitors can learn about the main papier-mâché processing techniques through audiovisual materials and a multimedia room. Alongside the finished sculptures, the material and how it is worked are also a focus. The museum thus offers insight into both the works and their craftsmanship.

San Francesco: Building History and Architecture

The monumental San Francesco complex was built in 1222. It includes a church, a monastery, a former oratory, a cloister, a garden and a square. A single-light window and a decorative detail dating from the 13th to 14th century are still visible in the cloister and church area. These dated details provide a specific point of reference when exploring the architecture of the larger complex.

The Trasporto del Carro in September

The ancient ritual of the Trasporto del Carro is celebrated in Mirabella Eclano every year on the Saturday before the third Sunday in September, in honour of Maria Santissima Addolorata. If you want to plan your trip around the celebration, check the specific event dates: the date follows a calendar rule and does not fall on the same day of the month every year.

The Carro is a wooden obelisk about 25 metres high, covered with seven tiers of braided straw in the Baroque style. It is moved by six pairs of oxen, while at least 300 members of the community handle 32 ropes. Its form, materials and the people involved give the ritual its distinctive character.

Sacred Art and Cultural Use

The Museo Arte Sacra is located in the historic centre of Mirabella Eclano, in the former churches of the Confraternity of the SS. Rosario and the Archconfraternity of San Prisco. It displays the Exultet, also known as the Rotolo di Quintodecimo. Seven connected parchments form the 3.62-metre-long scroll, written in Beneventan script. It is considered one of the oldest chants in the Catholic liturgy of the Roman rite.

While the Museo dei Misteri focuses on papier-mâché sculptures and their production, the Museo Arte Sacra offers insight into a liturgical work and its scriptural tradition. The Chiesa dell’Annunziata is also part of the area’s cultural history: it dates from the 16th century and is now used as an auditorium for conferences, exhibitions and concerts.

A Section of the Via Appia

Stage 13 of the Via Appia includes the Strada vicinale Grotte. It largely follows the ancient route as far as the junction for Mirabella Eclano. This stretch of road offers another historical perspective: here, the focus is on the route of a road, while Aeclanum represents the history of an ancient city and the museums showcase artworks and collections.
