When looking for a hotel in Pietradefusi, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: architecture and local history sit alongside a strong culinary tradition. The Torre Aragonese and several churches shape the town’s historic character, while fusilli, braciola and the Sagra del Fusillo define its local cuisine.

Panoramas and medieval origins

Pietradefusi’s main square is dominated by the monumental collegiate church, which overlooks a sweeping panorama of mountains, valleys and plains. The landscape and church architecture together provide a striking setting for the town’s history. Pietradefusi developed between the 12th and 13th centuries and has medieval origins. Those interested in its historical development can trace its past to a period well before the town’s later buildings were constructed.

Torre Aragonese: history and present-day use

The Torre Aragonese was built in 1431 on the orders of the nobleman Giacomo de Tocco, at the highest point of Pietradefusi. Historically, it served a monitoring function on the left bank of the Calore River. The restored complex comprises three levels, as well as extensive indoor and outdoor spaces that can be used for events, exhibitions and other events. Both the complex’s historical role and its intended uses are among the defining features of the tower.

Churches and architecture in Pietradefusi and Dentecane

The Chiesa Maria SS. Annunziata was built in 1728 by Cardinal Nicolò Coscia. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross, with three apses. The main altar is made entirely of Carrara marble, and an oil painting of the Annunciation hangs above it. The church also houses relics and has an altar dedicated to the patron saint, dating from 1916. Its floor plan, materials and interior works each bring their own distinctive elements to the history of the building.

The Chiesa S. Paolo Apostolo stands in the centre of the district of Dentecane. Its architectural lines date from the 19th century and are associated with the Vanvitellian style. Above the three stone portals on the façade is a large central rose window; beside the church stands a multi-storey bell tower with a large clock. Since Roman times, Dentecane has been a very important junction on the Via Appia, which linked Rome with Brindisi and the Orient. The church and this historic road connection give the district distinct points of historical interest.

Another stop in the town’s history is the Cappella della Madonna di Pompei: built in 1891 on Piazza Melisci at the foot of the Torre Aragonese, it was renovated in its present form in 2008. The dates distinguish its original construction from its later renovation, without equating the small chapel with the larger church buildings.

Handmade fusilli and local cuisine

Fusilli pietrafusani are handmade locally. A thin iron wire is used to shape the dough into a spiral with a hollow centre. The Braciola pietrafusana, also known as brasciòla or vrasciòla, uses different ingredients and is prepared slowly: it consists of rolled slices of beef, grated cheese and herbs such as mint and garlic, and is slowly cooked in tomato ragù. These dishes showcase two distinct sides of the local cuisine: the artisanal shaping of the pasta and the slow-cooked meat dish.

The Sagra del Fusillo, della Braciola pietrafusana e del vino aglianico has been held in Pietradefusi on the second weekend of August since 1971. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, it is best to check the specific date for that year. Another historical reference point is the Catasto Onciario of Pietra Delli Fusi: in 1754, it records a business named Gaetano Di Iorio.
