Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi
Accommodation in Sant'angelo
If you are looking for a hotel in Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, you can plan your stay around culture, the landscape or a specific occasion. Religious buildings tell the story of different eras, while the surrounding area is shaped by the Samnite Apennines. The Cammino di Guglielmo and religious events also offer distinct reasons to visit. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether your main focus is on architecture, nature experiences, hiking stages or an event date.
Culture and architectural history
The original cathedral of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi was built during the Norman period, between 1073 and 1085. At the center of the entablature above the portal of the Cathedral of Sant'Antonino Martire stands a 16th-century statue of the resurrected Christ. On either side are statues of San Michele and Sant'Antonino, dating from the 12th to 13th centuries. The different dates of origin make the building's history visible in specific details.
The Abbey of Goleto, also known as the Abbey of San Guglielmo al Goleto, was founded by Guglielmo around 1133. It preserves two churches, one above the other, whose architecture marks the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. At the abbey, the Torre Febronia is considered a masterpiece of Romanesque art; numerous blocks bearing reliefs from a Roman mausoleum were incorporated into the tower. Another date can be found at the church attached to the Convent of San Marco: it was built in the second half of the 13th century.
The origins of Castello degli Imperiale, also called Castello degli Imperiali, are traced back to the Lombard period, around the 9th century. The castle houses the Museo dell'Opera, which is also an archaeological site. It preserves architectural, sculptural and archaeological evidence of the original complex. The historic center can also be placed in context: before the 1980 earthquake, it was largely medieval in character. Paved streets and elegant squares make a stroll through the town especially pleasant.
Landscape and trails
Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi lies in the Samnite Apennines, between the source area of the Torrente Fredane and the left side of the upper Ofanto Valley. Dense forests and pastures shape the landscape in the higher parts of the area; more favorable locations include cultivated fields and olive groves. Woodlands, streams and diverse wildlife also characterize the surroundings, appealing to those seeking nature experiences and hikes.
The Cammino di Guglielmo also makes the area appealing to travelers planning a longer hiking stage. The fifth stage ends at the Abbey of Goleto and is approximately 22 kilometers long. The sixth runs from the abbey to the Sanctuary of San Gerardo in Materdomini, Caposele, and is listed as 17 kilometers long. This makes it possible to compare the distances, although the figure for the fifth stage is approximate. On the sixth stage, the route also passes the remains of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi station on the Avellino–Rocchetta Sant'Antonio railway line. Check the current route and trail information before setting out.
Events and travel planning
The Passion of Christ is performed in the streets of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi every Good Friday. Another date falls on the first Sunday in September, when the sixth stage of the Cammino di Guglielmo coincides with the historic annual pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of San Gerardo. Hundreds of people set out at night from small towns in Irpinia for the sanctuary. La Sagra delle Sagre features food and wine, crafts, art, folklore and agriculture. Check the dates and the relevant event program before your trip.
This lets you make the visits that matter to your trip a planned part of your stay.
