Amorosi combines a river landscape with architectural and cultural history. The town’s origins date back to the 9th century; the archaeological finds at the Necropoli di Amorosi open a window onto a much older period. The parish church, Palazzo Maturi, the necropolis, and Parco del Volturno each add a distinct note.

River Landscape and Location

Amorosi extends along the left bank of the Volturno and the right bank of the Calore. Parco del Volturno is a green park in Amorosi on the Volturno River. Thus, both rivers are part of the town’s geographical setting, while the specifically named green park lies on the Volturno. This distinguishes Amorosi’s location along both rivers from this particular place on the Volturno.

Parish Church and Palazzo Maturi

In the town center stands the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo, Amorosi’s parish church. Its façade dates from the 18th century; the three-story bell tower is made of contrasting gray and yellow tuff. It is topped by a dome clad in yellow-green glazed majolica tiles. The artworks also place the church in a particular period: most date from the 18th and 19th centuries. They include an altarpiece of the Madonna del Rosario and a painting depicting Saint Michael vanquishing the devil. The façade, tower, and artworks bring together architectural form and religious art at a landmark deeply connected to the town’s history.

Palazzo Maturi was built in 1775. It is associated with a collection of paintings and memorabilia covering Italian history from the late 19th century through 2000. The Polo Culturale e Museale della Fondazione „Allori“ is permanently housed in one wing of the palazzo; it was inaugurated on March 17, 2014. The collection and cultural center add further cultural and historical points of interest alongside the parish church. The dates have different meanings: 1775 marks the construction of the palazzo, while 2014 marks the inauguration of the cultural and museum center.

Archaeological History

A pre-Roman necropolis with rich grave goods was discovered near Amorosi in the Valle Telesina. The best-preserved burial area dates from the final phases of the Iron Age and the advanced Orientalizing period. Its dating spans from the third quarter of the 8th century to the second half or end of the 7th century BC. Two large tumulus burials with monumental circular structures measuring about 15 meters in diameter are attributed to members of the social elite of the time. This archaeological period long predates Amorosi’s origins and adds a much older history to the later connections of the parish church and palazzo.
