Buonalbergo: Discover the Via Francigena and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Buonalbergo
Buonalbergo connects the Via Francigena del Sud with traces of the Via Traiana, sacred art and historic buildings. When looking for a hotel in Buonalbergo, it helps to first decide on the purpose of your stay: Will your trip follow a stage, focus on architectural and religious history, or begin with an event date? These interests reveal different sides of the town and give your plans a clear direction.
Buonalbergo on the Via Francigena del Sud
Buonalbergo is both the end of stage 15 and the start of stage 16 of the Via Francigena del Sud. Stage 15 leads from Benevento to Buonalbergo and follows the Via Traiana towards Brindisi. The stages place the town along the route; its historic buildings give local significance to an interest in the Via Traiana.
Roman traces and Palazzo Spinelli
The Ponte delle Chianche is a Roman bridge on the Via Traiana in the municipality of Buonalbergo, in the province of Benevento. It lies in a valley crossed by the Torrente Santo Spirito, a tributary of the Miscano River. The bridge is therefore associated both with the Roman road and with a precisely identified part of the local landscape.
A milestone from the Via Traiana is displayed in the courtyard of Palazzo Spinelli. It was found in the Buonalbergo area and brought here in 1954. Palazzo Spinelli is a 17th-century ducal palace. The bridge and milestone highlight different aspects: one places the Via Traiana in the municipality, while the other preserves the road's memory in the palace courtyard.
Churches and religious art
The Santuario SS. Madonna della Macchia houses a 12th-century Byzantine wooden statue of the Virgin Mary and Child. The sanctuary is a single-nave church with an adjoining hermitage. The Chiesa Madre San Nicola di Bari differs in its three-nave layout: it has a central nave and two side aisles. Their architectural forms and artwork make the churches distinct points of reference for Buonalbergo's religious history.
Monte Chiodo and historic routes
Monte Chiodo is a hill north of Buonalbergo. The Rocca di Montegiove stood at its summit and was incorporated into the walls of the settlement there. Significant remains of ancient buildings and underground cavities are also described at Monte Chiodo; the cavities may possibly have been part of an aqueduct.
The Taverna di Monte Chiodo was a fortified stopping point on the Tratturo Regio Pescasseroli–Candela. It served for toll payments as well as rest and refreshment. This links another historic route, alongside the Via Traiana, to a specific stopping function.
Museum, fountain and Oasi San Pio
The ViATor Via Appia Traiana – Officina per la Ricerca museum opened on 27 July 2025 in the historic Palazzo Angelini in Buonalbergo. Another landmark is the Fontana del Lombardo, located between the historic centre and the Torrente Santo Spirito.
The entrance to Oasi San Pio is accessible; if this information is important for your plans, confirm current access before your visit. Spiritual, social and community events take place every year in the first week of July at the Oasi San Pio monument.
Events and local tradition
The Sagra de lo Ciammarruchiello takes place on 14 August in Piazza Garibaldi. It has been organised for more than 50 years; in 2018, the Italian Senate recognised it as a “Sagra di Qualità ”. The dates are clearly distinct for planning purposes: the events at the Oasi San Pio monument take place in the first week of July, while the Sagra is on 14 August. This can help you check which occasion suits your planned stay.
