Faicchio – Castle, Churches and Historic Traces
Accommodation in Faicchio
If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Faicchio, the town’s cultural attractions can guide your travel plans: a medieval castle, archaeological remains, church art and a paved devotional path offer different points of interest. Consider whether you are particularly interested in architectural history, sacred art or older historical evidence. The range of themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip.
Castle, Walls and Underground Aqueduct
The Castello Ducale was built in the 12th century at the behest of the Counts of Sanframondo. Its trapezoidal ground plan and the three cylindrical towers that remain at the corners—there were originally four—give the castle a distinctive architectural profile. Its history can therefore be considered both in terms of when it was built and its surviving architectural form.
Other historic traces date back to earlier periods. The underground Acquedotto Romano di Fontanavecchia dates from around the 3rd century BC. At Monte Acero, megalithic Oscan-Samnite walls date to the 6th century BC. The Arce di Monte Acero was a Samnite fortress used to watch for enemies. The Ponte Fabio Massimo also has a historical connection to this landscape: it facilitated connections between Monte Acero and Monte Monaco.
Churches and Sacred Art
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta was built in the Baroque style. Its noted features include marble altars and sacred artworks, including frescoes and statues. Two distinct details are recorded about the Chiesa di S. Maria di Costantinopoli: above the portal is an aedicule containing the remains of a fresco dating from before 1688; in a chapel on the right, two frescoes depict the Last Supper and the Washing of the Feet.
The Chiesa di San Rocco was built after a plague epidemic in the 17th century. Its single-nave interior is covered by an elliptical dome with four oculi. The Chiesa di Santa Lucia offers another point of interest in sacred art: it has six frescoes depicting the Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, as well as a choir with inlaid wooden choir stalls. These examples highlight different aspects—architecture, decoration and subject matter.
The complex of the Chiesa della B. V. Maria del Carmelo was built by the Carmelites in the 17th century. In 1898, it became the novitiate and motherhouse of the newly founded Order of the Suore degli Angeli. The mortal remains of Suor Serafina are kept there; she was beatified in Faicchio at a solemn ceremony on 28 May 2011. Another historical commemoration is associated with the Cappella di San Francesco: on 15 October 1943, it was the site of a massacre carried out by the Nazis, in which four young men and a local farmer were killed.
Cave and Via Crucis Path
The Grotta di San Michele was used by the Lombards around 700 for the worship of the Archangel Michael. Frescoes are still visible there today. If you plan a visit, check current visitor access in advance. The fully paved Via Crucis path starts in Faicchio’s historic centre, on Via D.A. Palmieri, and leads to the Convento di San Pasquale. Its described route and paving offer practical orientation; no walking time or difficulty level is specified.
Local Wine and Travel Planning
The Sagra Enogastronomica features the Fontana delle tre botti, from which wine flows. The DOC wine Falanghina del Sannio is also produced in Faicchio. If you include the Sagra in your travel plans, check the current programme in advance.
