Accommodation in Prata sannita
Location and history
Prata sannita lies at an altitude of 333 m on the southwestern foothills of the Matese Massif in the Media Valle del Volturno. The town’s history is reflected in its churches, monastery and museums; geological features and water take centre stage in the Valle del Lete. When planning your trip, you can choose between architectural history, collections and nature watching, and tailor your stay accordingly.
Lanes, bridge and castle
The medieval town centre is accessible mainly on foot via old cobbled lanes. They wind uphill between historic houses towards the centre, shaping the way around the old town. At the foot of the town centre, by the River Lete, stands the Ponte Medievale. The medieval stone bridge was built over an earlier Roman bridge; its distinctive humpback profile is a striking feature of the structure. The entrance to Castello Pandone is through the main gate on Largo Portelle in Prata sannita.
Church, monastery and collections
The parish church of San Pancrazio was probably built in the 17th century. The monastery of San Francesco dates from the 15th century; its cloister contains original Gothic-style capitals. A capital is the top part of a column; its original Gothic design makes the cloister’s architecture tangible in a specific detail. The monastery also houses the medieval mummies of the Pandone counts, in a wall cabinet to the right of the transept. Three frescoes are dated to between the late 16th century and the mid-17th century. This brings together historical evidence from different periods: the mummies are attributed to the Middle Ages, while the frescoes date from several centuries later.
The museums focus on other subjects. The Museo del Vasaio displays a wide variety of objects, from everyday items to elaborately designed artistic and decorative pieces. The Museo Storico, by contrast, consists of two sections, each devoted to a single conflict. The Second World War section brings together memorabilia from various troops from the war years of 1943–1945; its particular focus is the area to which the territory of Prata belongs. The collections therefore take different approaches: the Museo del Vasaio focuses on the range of objects, while the Museo Storico is organised by conflict and commemorates the war years.
Nature and Christmas traditions
In the Valle del Lete, the Grotta del Poeta is a geological formation along a path. A hike at the foot of the Rava di Prata offers views of small waterfalls and natural pools; a former hydroelectric plant is also located there. The Piscine del Lete offer picturesque views of the river. The valley thus brings together geological formations, water and a former technical structure as distinct points of interest.
A local Christmas tradition is also tied to a specific place: “Dui lena a Gliu Bambinu!” is associated with lighting a large Christmas bonfire in Piazza San Pancrazio. In the past, residents went from house to house to collect wood for the fire in the square.
