Roccamonfina lies on the southern side of its extinct crater, in a landscape of centuries-old chestnut forests. The terrain is defined by the volcano’s broad caldera and the cone of Monte Santa Croce, which reaches 1,005 metres. Monte La Frascara, Monte Santa Croce and the Lattani offer near-panoramic views. The landscape thus brings together the shape of the volcanic area and wide views from three named areas.

Volcanic Landscapes and Nature

The volcanic soils support the chestnut forests. In spring, crocuses, buttercups, primroses, orchids, anemones and violets bloom there. The flowers add a seasonal accent to the woodland landscape; those interested in plants will find a range of specifically named spring blooms here. Wildlife is also part of this habitat: the volcano’s forests are home to foxes, wild boar, badgers, stone martens and hares.

Hiking Trails and Routes

The Sentiero degli antichi Mulini runs along the Savone River between the hamlets of Torano and Garofali, then continues to the town of Roccamonfina. The trail is 6 kilometres long, easy to moderately difficult, and takes about three hours to walk. The Sentiero delle Orchidee e delle Nevi is described as an easy trail of about 4.5 to 5 kilometres each way. When planning, it is worth keeping these details distinct: for the second trail, the approximate distance explicitly refers to a single leg. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.

Via Napoli is also associated with an old route. From Piazza Nicola Amore, it heads towards the hamlet of Fontanafredda, which it was formerly connected to. The former route reflects the town’s history; the other two trails are present-day hiking routes.

Religious Architecture and Local History

The structure of the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maggiore dates to the beginning of the 11th century. The public clock at the base of the church depicts the sun, the moon and part of the Roccamonfina landscape. The Santuario e Convento di SS. Maria dei Lattani is a remarkable example of 15th-century Campanian art. The two buildings therefore offer different art-historical points of reference: the Collegiata is notable for the dating of its structure, while the Santuario is associated with 15th-century art.

Chestnuts, Products and History

Chestnuts shape Roccamonfina not only as part of its landscape but also as a regional product. The PGI “Castagna di Roccamonfina” is reserved for fruit from the Primitiva (also known as Tempestiva), Napoletana (also known as Riccia or Riccia Napoletana), Mercogliana (also known as Marrone), Paccuta and Lucente (also known as Lucida) cultivar groups. The Tempestiva cultivar takes its name from its early ripening and is marketed from the beginning of September. This links a specific seasonal reference with the variety of cultivar groups listed.

The history of chestnuts also spans different periods. The Sagra della Castagna di Roccamonfina was founded in 1976 to celebrate the chestnut harvest and the sale of chestnuts. The historic chestnut market, by contrast, was established in the early 20th century and took place in the town’s largest square.
