If you are looking for a hotel in Valle Di Maddaloni, its cultural heritage offers a concrete starting point for choosing your destination. The Ponti della Valle viaduct, historic churches and Il Castello represent different architectural and local histories.

Ponti della Valle and the Acquedotto Carolino

The Ponti della Valle viaduct in Valle di Maddaloni is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “18th-Century Royal Palace at Caserta with the Park, the Aqueduct of Vanvitelli, and the San Leucio Complex,” inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. The Ponti della Valle section of the Acquedotto Carolino is 529 metres long. The Ponti della Valle was built from 1753 to 1759 to a design by Luigi Vanvitelli as an aqueduct with three tiers of round arches. It lies between Monte Longano and Monte Garzano in the Valle di Maddaloni.

Churches and Il Castello

The Chiesa SS. Annunziata can be dated to the early 16th century. Its longitudinal plan comprises a central nave and two side aisles, each divided into three chapels. The vaulted ceiling features a fresco of the Annunciation by Giovanni Cosenza, dating from 1749.

The foundation of the Parrocchia San Pietro Apostolo is placed between the 10th and 11th centuries, during the decline of Lombard rule. The first records date from 1308, when it is referred to as “Monasterium S. Petri de Valle.” The interior is divided into a central nave and two side aisles, each with three chapels. The two churches therefore share a comparable basic layout; the Annunziata also has the fresco from 1749 as a further specific feature.

Il Castello was probably built in the 11th century on earlier remains. Charles I of Anjou owned it and gave it to the Artois family in 1269. An inventory from 1544 records a church inside Il Castello under the name S.Maria del Castello.

Hiking, cycling and the Festa della Mela

A CAI route description dated 21 January 2024 takes the well-marked CAI Trail 601 from Sant’Agata dei Goti to Valle di Maddaloni and links it to the Acquedotto Carolino. A CAI description from the same date states that a paved section of the Acquedotto Carolino is closed to traffic and names cyclists and runners as users. These are different details to consider when planning: for Trail 601, the trail number, markings and endpoints matter; for the aqueduct section, the surface, traffic restriction and user groups matter. If you plan to rely on this information for a trip, check the current route and conditions in advance.

The Festa della Mela is held every year in Valle di Maddaloni and usually lasts three days. At the 2024 edition, participants could sample local specialities. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.
