Monte Di Procida lies on a promontory opposite the island of Procida and is part of the Phlegraean Fields Regional Park. Its elevated position offers panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples and the surrounding area. Coastal scenery, volcanic geology and local traditions offer different ways to shape your stay. When looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around whether seaside walks, sweeping views, or culture and events are your priority.

Coastal Scenery and Geological Features

The Passeggiata di Torrefumo runs along the sea beside a protected cliff and through an undeveloped area of typical Mediterranean maquis. The geological development of the Phlegraean Fields is visible in the rocky cliff. In the early 1900s, Johnston-Lavis called it “breccia museo.” The oldest volcanic products of the Phlegraean Fields are also visible at Acquamorta Beach and along the coast of Marina di Vita Fumo. The cliff along the Passeggiata and the volcanic products at the two coastal locations thus represent different geological points of interest.

Viewpoints and Harbour

Belvedere Caduti in Mare is a viewpoint overlooking the islands of Procida, Ischia and Ventotene. Belvedere Stupor Mundi offers a viewpoint along the coastline from Capo Miseno to Punta Campanella. The town’s elevated position adds panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples and the surrounding area to these vantage points. Marina di Acquamorta is Monte Di Procida’s tourist harbour, with views of the Phlegraean Islands.

Villa Matarese and the Gardens

Villa Matarese is a tuff building dating from the early 20th century. It extends over three levels and covers 564 m². It is surrounded by a garden of about 3,600 m² with tall trees and fruit trees. Be aware of the access restrictions when planning a visit: the building is currently closed to the public, but the outdoor area is accessible.

The Giardini di Dedalo are a large green space with hedge mazes and offer room for small events. Admission is free, and the gardens are easily accessible to everyone. This makes them different from Villa Matarese: they are a green space that also provides room for small events.

Traditions and Events

The Assunta procession on 15 August is a centuries-old tradition. Montesican sailors serving in the armed forces carry a statue adorned with votive offerings through the town’s main streets. The annual arrangements may vary.

The Festa patronale dell’Assunta takes place during the week of Ferragosto, from 13 to 17 August, and traditionally ends with a fireworks display; the annual programme may vary. The Palio dell’Assunta is a rowing competition featuring traditional Montesican gozzi; its timing and organisation may also vary. If you plan to attend either event, confirm the dates for your travel year.

At Re Casatiello, grandparents, parents and grandchildren work together in a family competition to make Monte Di Procida’s traditional sweet, recognised with De.Co. status. Confirm the date before your trip if you plan to attend a future edition.
