History reflected in churches and settlement remains

Several periods are represented among the religious buildings and historical settlement remains. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista a Carpignano dates from the 5th century and was restored in 1656 and 2004. Around the 5th century, the rural settlement of Carpinianum was established near the Camaldoli River. It is considered the first settlement of the present-day town and was associated with a church dedicated to San Giovanni Battista. A document from 1190 mentions a small church in connection with the cult of San Biagio. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta al Trivio dates from the 10th century. The Cappella di S. Maria di Campo D'Isola is dated to the period from the 8th to the 13th century.

Villas, a religious building and the Mausoleo Torricelli

Later buildings add a variety of features. The Chiesa dei SS. Alfonso e Luigi is a 20th-century building; its design symbolically resembles a ship sailing towards heaven. Villa Venusio dates from the late 18th century and was built by the Capece Minutolo family. Villa Vulpes also dates from the 18th century: its design is neoclassical, and it includes a chapel dedicated to Saint Anne. The Mausoleo Torricelli is a different kind of historic structure: a tower-shaped tomb with urn burials dating from the 1st century AD. Several building sections were added later, creating the fortified farmstead of Masseria Torricelli.

Archaeological traces from different periods

Protohistoric finds dating from the 2nd millennium BC are located in the Pizzo Senza Fegato district. The Paparelle archaeological site includes a settlement and an extensive pre-Roman necropolis dating from the 4th to the 3rd century BC, with around 70 tombs. The archaeologist Davide Fabris discovered the finds in 1998. Some of them are incorporated into the basement of the Scuola Media Statale Illuminato-Cirino, which was intended to become the Museo Ipogeo. The archaeological traces thus range from protohistoric finds to the pre-Roman settlement and necropolis.

Agricultural plains and mosaics

Mugnano’s predominantly agricultural areas can be divided into two distinct units. The plain in unit D3 is characterized by open arable fields; hedges, rows of trees and individual trees locally add to the landscape and contribute to biodiversity. Unit D4 describes agricultural mosaics of traditional, mixed and specialized fruit-tree cultivation, as well as gardens with trees and areas under vines. These features serve as supplementary habitats, buffer zones and ecological connections to more natural areas. Mugnano also lies within the Pianura flegrea sub-system, a well-drained plain with dark, deep, permeable volcanic soils that are easy to work. The landscape descriptions therefore distinguish open arable fields from a more varied agricultural mosaic. The town’s character also includes the continued traditional production of tondini beans.
