Nerano: Hike to Baia di Ieranto and Village History
Accommodation in Nerano
Nerano stretches across a valley on the slopes of the San Costanzo mountains. Colorful houses and pergolas blend into the landscape, while the village center has grown up around the Church of San Salvatore. The village is easy to navigate, with paths leading out into the coastal landscape.
Hike to Baia di Ieranto
The path to Baia di Ieranto begins at Nerano’s Piazzetta. First, walk a few meters along the road toward Marina del Cantone, then continue on the hiking trail. The walk to the bay takes about 45 minutes and includes around 250 meters of elevation gain. These details can help you fit the hike into your travel plans.
Along the way, the path passes through Mediterranean scrub and terraced olive groves. Views include Punta Penna, Punta Campanella, and Capri with its Faraglioni. You will also pass Villa Rosa, where Norman Douglas wrote his work Siren Land. At a fork in the path, you can continue to Torre di Montalto, a 16th-century coastal watchtower.
On the way to the bay, you can see the entrance to Grotta delle Noglie below the rocky outcrop with the Church of San Costanzo. Baia di Ieranto can only be reached on foot or by canoe. An old staircase leads down to the small beach at Ieranto, also known as Marinella. FAI offers guided tours and nature activities at the bay. Before your trip, check which dates fall within your travel period and find out about current access conditions.
Village Churches and History
The Church of Jesus Salvatore is central to the village’s history: it became a parish church in 1613. Its roots appear to date back to the 15th century. Inside, arches and pillars divide the space into three naves. The names San Salvatore and Jesus Salvatore refer to the same church here.
Another sacred site is the Church of San Costanzo, a small white hermitage beside a pine grove on the eastern summit of Monte San Costanzo. On May 14, a procession carries the statue of the patron saint there from the Church of Santa Croce in Termini. The statue remains at San Costanzo until the third Sunday in July, then returns to the mother church. As dates may be adjusted locally, check the details before your trip.
Coast and Cuisine
Nearby Marina del Cantone has pebble beaches and clear water. From its beach, a short scenic path leads along the St. Antonio promontory to Recommone Beach; it can also be reached by sea. Torre di Recommone, dating from 1567, is also nearby. These coastal destinations are a separate part of planning your trip and should not be confused with the village center.
Nerano is also associated with a particular dish: Spaghetto alla Nerano was invented at the Maria Grazia restaurant in Marina del Cantone, Nerano. This historical connection adds a culinary dimension to the area’s hiking trails and churches.
Planning Your Stay
There is a small parking lot at the entrance to Nerano; alternatively, you can park along the road. When planning your hike, consider the elevation gain as well as the approximate walking time, and check access conditions shortly before your visit. When choosing a hotel, it may help to first decide what matters most to you: the hike to the bay, the churches and village history, or the nearby stretches of coast.
