Qualiano: Churches and Ancient Traces
Accommodation in Qualiano
Qualiano can be explored through several historical themes: the architectural history of its churches, traces of ancient transport routes and settlements, and the Sagra della Percoca nel Vino, which held its fourth edition in 2025. If you are looking for a hotel in Qualiano, these themes can help you decide how to prioritize your interests during your stay: church architecture, archaeology, and a specific culinary festival programme from 2025 offer different points of focus.
Church architecture and different spatial forms
The parish church of Santo Stefano Protomartire was first built on a smaller scale in the 17th century. The present building was reconstructed around 1712. A major reconstruction took place from 1788 to 1790, following the demolition of the previous church; Santo Stefano was consecrated on 16 December 1790. The consecration therefore belongs to the later reconstruction phase, not to the origins of the first church building.
The church has a Latin cross floor plan and comprises three naves. The Latin cross describes the overall shape, while the three naves divide the interior into longitudinal sections. The rectangular bell tower stands to the right of the façade, separate from it; it has three levels and is topped by a lantern.
Maria Santissima Immacolata has a different spatial form. The church was consecrated in 2009, and its interior has a circular floor plan. The presbytery contains a 2015 mosaic depicting the history of salvation by Marko Ivan Rupnik. The architectural comparison sets the Latin cross plan with three naves against the circular interior; the mosaic adds a specifically named work of art to the comparison.
Ancient transport routes and settlement traces
The ancient Consolare Campana road is also attested in Qualiano. It connected Capua, Aversa and Pozzuoli, adding a historic transport route to the area’s church architecture.
Tombs, patrician villas, water cisterns and a rustic villa have been discovered in the archaeological area around S. Pietro ad Aram. The finds date from the 4th century BC to the 3rd century AD. They therefore include different types of archaeological evidence: burial sites, residential buildings and water-storage structures.
A necropolis dating to the 4th century BC was uncovered on Via Cavour during construction work for Qualiano’s first social housing development. Twenty-two tombs and associated grave goods were found there. By comparison, the archaeological evidence around S. Pietro ad Aram includes several types of finds and spans centuries; the site on Via Cavour centres on a necropolis from a clearly specified period.
The archaeological evidence also suggests that Qualiano may have been a Roman statio, where legions stopped on their way from Rome to Cuma. This interpretation describes a possible function in Roman transport. It remains a hypothesis, distinguishing it from the discovered tombs, villas and cisterns.
A culinary festival programme from 2025
The Sagra della Percoca nel Vino held its fourth edition in 2025. It was scheduled for Saturday, 6 September 2025, from 8 pm in Piazza G. D’Annunzio and Via Roma in Qualiano. Food stalls and a food area featuring traditional dishes were planned; live folk music by the group I Carbone was also scheduled. Unlike architectural and settlement traces, this example is tied to a specific date and an announced programme.
