Quarto: Ancient Traces and Distinctive Places
Accommodation in Quarto
Quarto brings together ancient sites, old roads, and distinctive landscapes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Quarto, these themes can shape your trip: Fescina is a burial site, while the Mansio Romana served as a rest and supply station on an ancient route; Montagna Spaccata and Punta Marmolite draw attention to the landscape. There is also a municipal park and Casa Mehari, which can only be accessed during events.
Fescina and Roman Use
The Fescina necropolis lies on Via Brindisi. This burial complex includes a pointed columbarium known as Fescina. The necropolis was used from the Augustan period until the end of the 1st century AD. Fescina is therefore defined by its clear burial function, distinctive architectural feature, and historical period. This sets it apart from a rest and supply station such as the Mansio Romana.
Ancient Roads and Supply Stops
The Via Consolare reached the basin of Quarto through the artificial cutting of Montagna Spaccata and crossed it for almost three miles. At the top, the cutting is 78 metres wide and 50 metres high. The historic route and these measurements complement each other: the passage is understood as part of the road’s course, while its width and height give a concrete sense of the scale of the cutting.
The Mansio Romana, dating to the 1st century AD, is on Via Mercadante. It served as an ancient rest and supply station on the route connecting Rome and Puteoli. The building has two storeys, each with four interconnected rooms. Here, functional history and layout come together: its purpose links the Mansio to ancient travel, while its room arrangement adds a specific architectural detail.
Other Traces of Building History
On today’s Via Cimarosa, a villa covering an area of 500 m² developed at the edge of the ancient course of the Via Campana. The villa at the edge of the ancient course of the Via Campana covered 500 m²; the Mansio served as a rest and supply station and had a multi-storey layout. The Church of San Nicola is one of the surviving buildings of Castro di Serra. It is the best-preserved building there and the only one that still has a roof.
Landscape and Municipal Places
A lava dome is visible in the locality of “Punta Marmolite,” northeast of the Piana di Quarto. Together with the measurements of the Montagna Spaccata cutting, it forms a landscape highlight alongside the historic buildings: one place is defined by a visible geological feature, the other by an artificial cutting through the terrain.
At the inauguration of the Parco Urbano Comunale di Quarto on 7 October 2025, its total area was stated as 12,000 m², including 9,000 m² of green spaces and flower beds. That is three-quarters of the stated area. Casa Mehari is accessible only during certain events and is mainly reserved for activities by organizations and associations. So don’t plan on visiting Casa Mehari as a place that is open at all times.
Getting There and Special Access
