Schiazzano can be explored from different angles: its historic hamlet, church and craft history, and citrus and cheese traditions each offer a different perspective. When planning your visit, you can combine these themes with the tours, events and bus connections described here.

Historic Village and Churches

The Church of Santissimo Salvatore was built at the end of the 16th century on the remains of a 15th-century church and completed around 1624. Its main altar is made of polychrome marble from the 18th century. The church’s construction history and its altar date from different periods, each giving it a distinct historical connection.

The lanes of the Casale are also part of the village scene for visitors to explore. The historic Casale once flourished through maritime trade. An 18th-century palace stands opposite the parish church. The “Le riggiole” route follows in the footsteps of Ignazio Chiaiese, a Neapolitan master of riggiole art who worked in the 18th century. The church, lanes, palace and route offer different points of interest if you are curious about Schiazzano’s architectural and cultural history.

Tours and Local Produce

The “Schiazzano e Tradizioni” tour offers several practical insights into local traditions: it includes a guided visit to a historic citrus grove dating from 1893, a tasting of typical products and an explanation of limoncello made according to an old recipe. The tour also includes making pizza at Ristorante da Francesco in the historic centre of Schiazzano. Advance arrangements may be required for this tour; check before your visit.

Azienda Agrituristica Turuziello offers a demonstration of mozzarella-making. It also produces mozzarella, caciotte, caciocavalli and Provolone del Monaco DOP according to traditional family recipes. The demonstration and production are distinct aspects of the business; product availability may change. If you are interested in particular products, check their current availability in advance.

Fiordilatte Festival and Living Nativity

The Fiordilatte Festival takes place in Schiazzano on 6 August and the days that follow. Traditional dishes on offer include Fior di Latte, local cheeses, Provolone del Monaco and lemons. The festival is accompanied by an exhibition of local crafts, including metalwork, glass mosaics, woodwork, embroidery and lace. Check the specific event dates and programme when planning your trip.

The living Nativity recreates an 18th-century Neapolitan scene with around a hundred costumed participants. Its route starts beside the parish church near the piazza and passes through lanes alongside citrus groves, vineyards, stables, craft shops and open-air stalls. The event brings together a historical portrayal and a range of local settings.

Landscape and Getting There

Schiazzano’s landscape includes chestnut woods and lemon groves. The citrus groves also feature in the tours described here and along the Nativity route; the chestnut woods add another dimension to the landscape. SITA buses between Massa Centro and Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi stop at the junction with the turning for Schiazzano. Some SITA buses continue to the village square. Check the current timetable before travelling.
