Somma Vesuviana lies on the slopes of Monte Somma, north of the Vesuvius volcanic complex. The town brings together medieval architecture, archaeological sites, religious traditions and trails through the volcanic landscape. If you’re looking for a hotel in Somma Vesuviana, first decide what you want to focus on: Casamale, the Villa Augustea or a tour of Monte Somma each offer a different way to experience the destination.

Casamale: medieval architecture and festival traditions

Casamale is the only medieval village within the perimeter of Vesuvius National Park. The district preserves churches, palaces, portals, arches and other examples of historic urban development. The medieval Borgo Casamale retains almost all of its thirteen towers within its ring of walls. You can explore its historic architecture through individual features as well as the fortifications of the borgo.

A special festival tradition is the Festa delle Lucerne: thousands of small oil lamps illuminate the streets of Casamale and are arranged on geometrically shaped wooden structures. The festival tradition also includes the procession of the Madonna della Neve. On August 5, it is carried from the Collegiata through the four gates of the walled town. The Presepe Vivente in Casamale draws on the iconography of 18th-century Neapolitan nativity scenes and depicts, among other things, workshops and historic crafts. If a festival or performance is a deciding factor in your trip, check the current event dates in advance.

Archaeological sites and religious history

The Villa Augustea lies at the foot of Monte Somma and is a rare archaeological site with vertically readable layers. They make it possible to trace the history of volcanic eruptions in the Vesuvius area. The site has been systematically excavated since the 1990s, and archaeological research is ongoing.

The Castello d’Alagno was commissioned in 1458 at the behest of Lucrezia d’Alagno. It lies right next to the historic center, near one of the gates to the borgo, and has four cylindrical towers at its corners. Today, the building is almost entirely in ruins. Check local access before visiting.

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria a Castello was built in 1622 on the site of an older fortress. It continues to attract many pilgrims from the surrounding area. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina “Michele Russo” is located in the former cellars and garden of the monumental complex of Santa Maria del Pozzo. Its approximately 3,000 objects, tools and finds offer insight into rural culture from before the introduction of agricultural machinery. Topics include transport systems, viticulture and winemaking, as well as activities around the hearth. They also include the religious protection of the area devoted to animals and its role in household management. Museum visits are arranged by phone; confirm opening and visiting hours by phone in advance.

Monte Somma and getting there

The circular trail on Monte Somma leads to Punta Nasone. At 1,132 meters, it is the highest peak of Monte Somma. So, alongside historic sites, a tour through the volcanic landscape is another possible focus for your stay.

A description updated on April 4, 2023, mentions apitourism and educational workshops at a farm in a rural plain about three kilometers from the town center, exploring the relationships between bees, the environment and people.

Somma Vesuviana is connected to the Circumvesuviana railway. Its stops include Mercato Vecchio, Somma centro and Rione Trieste. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable before setting out.
