Arenabianca combines a terraced hillside setting with a distinctive history of architecture and settlement. If you’re looking for a hotel in Arenabianca, consider what you want most from your destination: the landscape, local history or hiking?

Landscape and Townscape

Arenabianca is situated on a sunny mid-slope at about 680 metres above sea level. The town overlooks the valley below and is laid out in terraces along a gentle hillside. The light-coloured limestone quarries gave Arenabianca its name and remain a visible part of its townscape and urban character.

Local History and Architectural Heritage

The present-day settlement of Arenabianca took shape in the 17th century around the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto. Its older origins are supported by pre-Roman archaeological finds at Località Cafari. Some historians associate Arenabianca with ancient Cauli, which has appeared on historical maps since the 16th century. This remains a historical interpretation, not a confirmed identification.

Il Palazzo in Arenabianca is dated to 1874. Its features include a pebble-paved courtyard, an entrance decorated with stucco and featuring a groin vault, arcaded porticoes and a wrought-iron staircase. The term “groin vault” describes the intersecting ridges of this type of vault. Villa Gerbasio is a 19th-century summer residence with its own park. The Church of Santa Maria di Loreto is also part of the town’s history: the altarpiece of the Madonna di Loreto was restored and returned there after the work was completed.

Hiking and Cultural Traditions

The Cammino del Negro is a 160-kilometre circular walking route. It follows old mountain paths, gravel roads and quiet side roads; the stages are generally short and considered suitable even for less experienced hikers. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the full length of the loop from the length of individual stages. Check the current route information before setting out on a specific hike, as the distance may change if the route is adjusted.

The yellow bread “u pan(e) citr(o)n(e)” is part of the area’s culinary history and was the main staple for generations. Another community tradition is the Palio delle Frazioni, which gives people born in Arenabianca the opportunity each year to represent their district at an event. If you’d like to plan your stay around it, check the dates and venue for the specific edition.

Getting There

From the Padula-Buonabitacolo exit on the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria motorway, travel about 400 metres along the former SS 19 delle Calabrie towards Lagonegro–Casalbuono; then take the SP 192, which leads to the centre of Arenabianca after about 4 kilometres. Both distances are approximate. Check road conditions before travelling.
