Discover Caggiano: Castle, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Caggiano
If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Caggiano, its historic buildings, countryside paths and local events can help you choose the focus of your trip. In the town, a medieval castle and a winding historic centre sit alongside traces of different eras. The area around the Melandro offers another perspective on Caggiano; cultural and culinary events are also held here, and their dates may be important when planning your trip.
Castle and historic centre
The Castello Normanno del Guiscardo and the fortifications of Caggiano date from the 9th or 10th century and served to defend the town. Today, part of the Castello is used for exhibitions, conferences and other cultural events. This cultural use applies to only part of the complex; its former defensive function remains an important part of its history.
The Museo Antiquarium Civico preserves archaeological materials from the Insteii tomb monument. The historic centre is characterised by a winding network of lanes, steps and squares. Numerous traces of the past give a walk through it a historic character. Circular engravings catch the eye on the façade of one church; inside another, side chapels dedicated to influential local families offer a reminder of the town’s history.
Churches and historical traditions
Santa Venere, also known as the Cappella di Santa Veneranda or Chiesa di Santa Sofia, probably dates from the 11th century. This single-nave Greek-Byzantine church has a semicircular apse. It stands outside the town walls on a rocky spur and is visible from the valley and the Portuccia and Marvicino viewpoints.
The Chapel of San Luca was built in the 13th century. Until 1864, a hospital stood beside it, where pilgrims were treated and given shelter.
According to local tradition, Santa Maria dei Greci dates back to the mid-6th century. Its original Greek-cross layout is associated with the Basilian monks and Orthodox worship. The layout was later altered to a Latin cross. This distinction in the chronology helps avoid confusing the reported early form with the building’s later, modified state.
The Melandro, caves and paths
The Melandro flows through the area of Caggiano and forms the physical boundary between the regions of Campania and Basilicata. The Grotta dello Zachito lies within the municipality, north to northeast of the town and near the river. The river and cave are among the landscape features described in the surrounding area, while the castle and lanes form the historic focus in the town itself.
A walk of about an hour through the canyon carved by the Melandro takes in several sulphur springs and rock formations informally known as the Faraglioni. The duration is approximate; the walk links the canyon with these specific natural features. Another scenic path starts at Portuccia, on the eastern edge of the historic centre, and runs across sloping rocky terrain to the Church of Santa Venere. Its route and destination set it apart from the canyon walk.
Festivals and culinary events
Since the 1970s, Ferragosto Caggianese has featured food festivals, games, theatre and music performances, as well as a White Night. Programmes may vary from one edition to the next. If a festival is a deciding factor in your trip, check the event dates in advance.
The “Percorso Culinario nel borgo di Caggiano” is a food festival in the historic centre. At its 32nd edition in 2024, at least five local specialities were offered along the streets in the evening. When planning a stay, you can choose between focusing on historic buildings, taking a walk in the countryside, or timing your visit to coincide with an event.
