Several hiking route descriptions around Casa Vitagliano lead to different junctions, high points, and destinations. The historic Sentiero delle Formichelle connects Tramonti with the nearby coastal towns of Maiori and Minori. Other routes follow Sentiero 315E, pass through the center of Minori, or form a loop through villages in Tramonti. For planning purposes, it is worth distinguishing between the trail numbers and the stages mentioned: sharing a place name does not automatically mean that two descriptions refer to the same section.

Sentiero delle Formichelle and the junction with 315E

At Casa Vitagliano, at an elevation of 218 meters, Sentiero delle Formichelle leaves the paved road and becomes a municipal footpath. About 200 meters beyond Casa Vitagliano, the trail reaches the junction with Sentiero 315E. These two details mark different points of reference: first, where the road becomes a footpath, and then the junction with another trail.

The route of Sentiero 315E is described through three named points and their elevations. After passing through Casa Vitagliano, it initially climbs to Vallone Capo d’Acqua at an elevation of 328 meters. It then reaches the scenic Punta Mele at 366 meters. At Mandrino, Sentiero 315E ends at an elevation of 442 meters, at the junction with trails 315A and 315D. The names help distinguish the climb, viewpoint, and endpoint.

Loop hikes and trails to Minori

A loop hike from Casa Vitagliano follows Sentiero 315C, also known as Sentiero delle Formichelle, to the center of Minori. Another CAI loop hike starts and ends in LocalitĂ  Casa Vitagliano di Tramonti. When identifying the routes, therefore, check whether a description mentions the trail via 315C to Minori or explicitly places the start and finish in LocalitĂ  Casa Vitagliano.

Sentiero delle 13 Chiese offers another route perspective: in the wider area around Casa Vitagliano, it forms a loop through 11 of Tramonti’s 13 villages. This is a broader regional route and should not be confused with the short junction between Sentiero delle Formichelle and 315E.

Historical background and trail points

The Formichelle were women who carried freshly picked lemons in baskets weighing about 55 kilograms on their heads to Maiori and Minori. The background to these trails therefore extends beyond their routes to a historic occupation connected with the two coastal towns.

Sentiero delle Formichelle crosses Sentiero delle 13 Chiese near the Chiesa di Sant’Elia. From there, it descends via Via Vitagliano to Casa Vitagliano. Another point along the Formichelle trail is Vallone Trapulico, identifiable by an old water channel carved into the rock beside the path. Check trail conditions before your hike.

Another historical connection is Giustino Fortunato, a historian, economist, and naturalist. The trail dedicated to him is associated with his three-day crossing of the Monti Lattari in 1877. The route ran from Cava dei Tirreni via Casa Vitagliano to Punta Campanella.

More routes and practical information

Sentiero dei Limoni connects Minori and Maiori along citrus terraces. From San Gineto, you can reach it in about 20 minutes on foot; your pace and trail conditions may affect the walking time. This connection between the coastal towns is distinct from the trail sections around Casa Vitagliano.

To access Sentiero 315E, take the SITA bus on the Maiori–Tramonti line to Pucara, then walk about 2 kilometers to Paterno Sant’Elia. Check the timetable before travelling. On the “Da Ravello a Tramonti” stage, CAI 315E is used from kilometer 3.9 to kilometer 9.2; Casa Vitagliano is one of the points of interest along this stage. It also includes a 1.3-kilometer round-trip detour to Convento di San Nicola.
