Castelnuovo Cilento offers two distinct focal points for planning a trip: the historic center, with its castle, churches and works of art, and the Via Silente, whose circular route begins here. The view from the hilltop is also part of the town’s character. If you are looking for hotels in Castelnuovo Cilento, you can plan your stay around whether local history and art or a cycling trip is your priority.

Local History and Views

From the hilltop of Castelnuovo Cilento, the view stretches across the entire Alento plain, from Monte Stella to the sea near Ascea. The panorama thus offers a broad landscape view between a named mountain and the coast near Ascea. Those interested in the area around the town will find a different perspective here than among the buildings in the historic center.

Castello Talamo-Atenolfi stands in the upper part of the historic center. Passing through the castle gates, you reach an impressive staircase leading to the single-nave Church of Santa Maria Maddalena. The castle, staircase and church thus form a specific sequence in the town center; the single nave is also a characteristic feature of the church.

Castelnuovo Cilento is also home to the parish church of Santa Chiara, with its adjoining monastery of the Friars Minor. Marchese Talamo Atenolfi had the church built at the end of the 19th century. This provides different points of reference for placing the buildings in time: the medieval Castello Talamo-Atenolfi and the later parish church and monastery.

Pebble-Stone Artworks in the Town

Guerino Galzerano’s pebble-stone artworks can be seen at several locations in Castelnuovo Cilento: at his home, in the garden below the castle, in the hamlet of Santa Caterina and at his monumental tomb in the cemetery. The art is therefore not confined to a single location; the places mentioned include both a hamlet and various sites in the town.

In the garden below the medieval tower, existing features are clad with stones. Guerino Galzerano also created new sculptures there, including chairs. Two different forms of design can thus be seen: existing features are given a stone covering, while the chairs are among the newly created sculptures. This distinction gives the art on site a concrete form without limiting the works described to a single type.

The Via Silente as a Cycling Trip

The Via Silente is a circular cycling route approximately 600 kilometers long. It runs along stretches of coastline and through the mountains of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The circular route starts in Castelnuovo Cilento and is divided into 15 stages. The approximate distance and the number of stages answer different planning questions: the approximate number of kilometers indicates the total distance, while the stages break up the route. You can therefore consider the route’s distance and structure separately before finalizing your own plans.

Vallo della Lucania–Castelnuovo railway station is a few kilometers from the start of the Via Silente. If you are considering traveling by train, check the current connections to the station. For cyclists, the Via Silente office is located at Via Velina 102 in Velina, a hamlet of Castelnuovo Cilento. There, they can register for the route and collect the document “La Silentina.”

A Date in July

The feast in honor of Saint Mary Magdalene is celebrated in Castelnuovo Cilento on July 22; the event program may vary. You can take this date into account when planning your trip without assuming that the program is the same every year.
