Hiking trails and protected landscapes take center stage on Monte Bulgheria. Celle Di Bulgheria also offers historic buildings and a traditional explanation of its name. For your trip, you can choose between specific trail routes, local history, and the landscape.

Hiking Trails on Monte Bulgheria

A hike up Monte Bulgheria described by the Club Alpino Italiano starts at the Santuario di Santa Sofia in Località Pantrato, in the hamlet of Poderia in the municipality of Celle Di Bulgheria. The Valle-Cupa trail passes through a holm oak forest and Mediterranean scrub. It crosses the Altipiano trail, which leads to the summit of Monte Bulgheria.

From the Valle-Cupa trail, you can enjoy views along the course of the Fiume Mingardo to its confluence with the Torrente Serrapotamo. The hike on Monte Bulgheria also includes slippery sections and short exposed stretches.

To reach the starting point, the route described follows the Cilentana expressway, the SS 18 variant, to the Celle Di Bulgheria exit. Turn left there and follow the provincial road to Poderia, through the town center and on to the Chiesa di Santa Sofia. There is a fountain at the starting point where you can refill drinking water. Check locally whether water is available.

Local History and Historic Buildings

The founding of Celle Di Bulgheria is thought to date back to around 700 AD. At that time, Bulgarian settlers are said to have settled on the slopes of Monte Bulgheria and founded villages. One of these villages became the seat of a laura, a monastic community with cells for Italo-Greek monks. The name “Celle” arose from this monastic tradition.

The buildings also reflect different historical periods. The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Neve was built in 1715 over an existing 17th-century chapel. The Casa del Canonico Antonio Maria De Luca dates from the late 18th century. It is located in the historic town center and overlooks Piazzetta Crocevia. The Santuario di Santa Sofia is a church sanctuary in Poderia.

Protected Landscape

The Monte Bulgheria Site of Community Importance covers 2,400 hectares and also extends across the territory of Celle Di Bulgheria. Its elevation ranges from about 450–500 meters to 1,225 meters above sea level.

When planning your trip, you can give different topics different emphasis: for the hike, the starting point, trail connections, and the described terrain features are the main considerations. The building history offers a distinct way to explore the town, from the older chapel to the late-18th-century house.
