Centola: Historic Center and Coastal Areas
Accommodation in Centola
Centola combines a historic center with sights and landscapes throughout the municipality. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these different places: some are in the town itself, while others are in San Severino or on the coast near Palinuro. This can help you decide which historical, cultural, or scenic themes you would like to shape your stay.
Historic Neighborhoods and Squares
Rione Vallone, also known as San Giocondo, is the oldest part of Centola’s historic center and the area where the town began. The historic center also includes Rione Grancella and Piazzetta del Rosario. A bell tower, built toward the end of the 9th century, rises above the square. The two neighborhoods offer different historical points of interest in the town center.
A street in the historic center ends at the small Piazzetta del Padreterno. From there, you can look out over the Lambro Valley. The square thus connects the town center with a view of the valley landscape.
Church and Museum
Chiesa San Nicola di Mira was built around the beginning of the 17th century and is strongly influenced by the Baroque style. Inside are frescoes and altars from the 18th and 19th centuries. Its furnishings therefore reflect several centuries. After restoration work prompted by structural instability, the church reopened for worship in 2014.
The Museo delle testimonianze e della memoria is housed in a wing of Centola’s former school building. Its interior preserves selected records of the area’s history, catalogued and arranged by theme. Tools from earlier times convey material culture, showing how history can also be understood through the objects used in past work. In this way, the museum offers a different perspective from the neighborhoods and religious buildings in the town center.
A Local Specialty
Cicola del Cilento is also among the municipality’s traditional specialties. In an account updated on December 6, 2024, by the regional agricultural authority, Centola is named as a place where the product is still made. Its production is associated with the traditional household practice of slaughtering and processing pigs. Small pieces of mandarin and/or orange peel are also usually added. This ingredient is a specific feature of the preparation described for Centola.
San Severino and the Municipality’s Coast
The ancient village of San Severino di Centola lies within the municipality; its medieval origins are dated to the 10th–11th centuries. Access to Borgo San Severino is via a staircase that climbs the mountain from a small parking area at the entrance. The municipality also falls within Parco nazionale del Cilento e del Vallo di Diano.
A series of defensive towers was built along the municipality’s coastline between 1550 and 1600. At Capo Palinuro, Grotta Azzurra is the largest and best-known cave in the cave complex; it has sulfur-rich hydrothermal springs. Antiquarium di Palinuro is located in the village of Ficocella, on a coastal slope directly beside a bay. These places connect the coast with different historical and geological themes.
For a specific route marker in Palinuro, there is the Sentiero della Primula: it begins and ends at Spiaggia delle Saline. The starting and finishing points are therefore the same beach. Together with the coastal sites, the ancient village, and the historic neighborhoods, these places show how different travel interests each have their own points of reference within the municipality of Centola.
