Discover Cosentini
Accommodation in Cosentini
Cosentini can be explored through several cultural themes: its annual carnival tradition, historical traces of agriculture, and the architectural history of its churches. A tour along the Alta Via del Monte Stella adds a route through the area to these perspectives. When planning your trip, you can choose between festive traditions, history and an outdoor activity.
Carnival: programme and tradition
The Carnival of Cosentini is an annual tradition involving the entire community. It is listed in the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Campania Region. The programme includes a masked parade, the Ballata di Zeza and a tarantella.
The Ballata di Zeza features Pulcinella, Zeza, Vincenzella and Zì Ron Nicola, accompanied by a choir and traditional folk music. Alongside the masked parade and tarantella, the programme therefore also includes a performance with named characters and music.
The celebration also involves sharing food and wine around the fire where Carnuluvaro is burned. This brings the communal carnival tradition together with a specific activity: eating and drinking around the fire.
Palmenti and historical agriculture
The palmenti of Cosentini are large stone containers located outdoors. Carved from monoliths, they were used by different growers to press grapes. Their construction and former use offer a vivid glimpse into wine production.
The historic cultural landscape can also be placed in context: during the Borgia period, vineyards, fig groves and olive groves were established in Cosentini. Surviving wooden olive presses also bear witness to agricultural activity. Together, the palmenti and presses point to different stages of work and different crops, without combining them into a single process.
Architectural history and churches
The architectural history includes the old baronial palace in Cosentini: the Borgia family acquired it and had it restored. Below Cosentini, a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria del Valloncello had stood since the 14th century. Santa Maria del Valloncello may originally have been an old hermitage.
The renovated church on the site of Santa Maria del Valloncello is now dedicated to the Assunta, the Assumption of Mary. Its façade is divided into three sections and designed in a rational Neoclassical style. Four pilasters divide it, and a pediment crowns the top. These details provide specific architectural features that define the character of the façade.
The procession of the statue of the Assunta on 15 August is another annual tradition. From dawn until evening, the statue is carried to other churches and chapels in the surrounding area before returning to its church. Its fixed calendar date and the day’s described course give this custom a distinct place in the calendar, separate from Carnival.
A tour along the Alta Via del Monte Stella
A tour along the Alta Via del Monte Stella can begin in Cosentini, pass through the Montanari area and continue as far as the provincial road. Along the route, the path follows a ridge that becomes particularly scenic. Visibility can vary depending on the weather, and trail conditions can also change with the seasons. If you include the tour in your plans, take these conditions into account beforehand.
The different themes offer distinct points of focus: Carnival is an annual community tradition, the procession is tied to 15 August, while the palmenti, olive presses and palace tell of earlier agricultural and architectural contexts. The route, in turn, can be understood through its course via Montanari and its ridge section. When planning your trip, you can choose the theme that interests you most.
