Eboli brings together sacred architecture, archaeological traces, museums, paths and coastal landscape. If you’re looking for a hotel in Eboli, these themes can help you choose what to explore based on your interests: perhaps churches and religious history, archaeological sites or nature. The town offers a range of points of interest, from buildings with different architectural features to coastal landscape and local produce.

Churches and Religious History

The Chiesa di San Francesco combines Gothic architecture with Baroque decoration. The monumental complex of San Francesco d’Assisi in Eboli offers a different historical perspective: it dates from 1286 and is among the earliest historically documented Franciscan settlements. Both details offer a glimpse into the long history of Franciscan buildings in Eboli, without implying that their architectural features are the same.

At San Pietro alli Marmi, the architectural layout takes center stage: the church has a Romanesque floor plan with three apsidal naves. Its crypt houses the venerated body of San Berniero. The Santuario dei Santi Medici Cosma e Damiano also reflects religious tradition. It was built in the mid-20th century to replace the older church opposite it. That older church is still in use; it was too small for the pilgrims who came from across the region. Both the building’s history and the continued use of the older church are therefore part of this story.

Museums and Historical Traces

The Museo archeologico nazionale di Eboli is housed in the former San Francesco monastery. The MOA – Museum of Operation Avalanche focuses on a different historical subject: it presents documentation about the Salerno landings in September 1943. Visitors who want to explore Eboli’s history from different perspectives will find both a museum housed in a former monastery and a museum dedicated to a specific episode of the Second World War.

Historical traces can also be found outside the museums. At Epitaffio in Eboli, a stone inscription commemorates the construction of Via del Grano. At the Montedoro archaeological site, extensive sections of a defensive line, a settlement and a place of worship have been excavated. The San Vito al Sele archaeological site represents a long period of human presence, from the 5th–4th century BC to the 16th century AD. The Villa romana is an extensive domus from the Republican period that underwent major reconstruction in two successive phases. These places offer different perspectives, from an inscription and excavated areas to a Roman domus.

Paths and Coastal Landscape

The Percorso dei Mulini starts at the Acquedotto dell’Acero, also known as dell’Ermice, a few meters from the Basilica di San Pietro alli Marmi. After an initial section that can be driven, the route continues along a path accessible only on foot. The “PINETA-MARE” nature trail is about 8 km long and runs within the “Foce Sele-Tanagro” nature reserve. These are two different route descriptions: one notes the transition from a section that can be driven to a footpath, while the other gives the approximate length and its course through the nature reserve.

Another natural area is Eboli’s coastline. Extending for 8 km, it includes sand, backdunes, and stable and mobile dunes. Together with the paths, the coast is a distinct focus alongside the churches, museums and archaeological sites. The features described range from a route’s course to the different forms of the coastal landscape.
