Futani offers several clear focal points for planning a trip: the Sentiero Sacro, the pilgrimage to Monte Gelbison and cultural sites in the municipality. If you are looking for a hotel in Futani, you can decide whether you would most like to explore the nature trail, its religious history or places such as Menevavo. The sights offer different experiences, from a long route and medieval history to a multimedia open-air museum.

The Sentiero Sacro: trail length, elevation gain and landscape

The Sentiero Sacro is about 13 kilometres long and leads from Futani’s historic centre up to an elevation of 1,705 metres, with an elevation gain of 1,275 metres. It is a trail of religious, natural and anthropological interest in the mountains accessible from Futani. Both the approximate trail length and the substantial elevation gain are important details for your planning; check trail conditions before setting out.

Along the way, different vegetation zones follow one another: olive groves and oak woods give way to chestnut and alder woods, followed higher up by beech woods. This sequence gives the trail its distinctive landscape and links several types of vegetation along one route. Futani’s nature trails also include the Sentiero del Mulino and the Sentiero di S. Cecilia.

Pilgrimage and ecclesiastical history

The Santuario della Madonna del Sacro Monte stands on the summit of Monte Gelbison, at an elevation of 1,705 metres. Basilian monks founded the sanctuary in the second half of the 10th century. The pilgrimage begins at the Chiesa di San Marco Evangelista in Futani. The church dates from the early years of the 18th century, marking a considerably later point in history than the founding of the sanctuary.

The Chiesa di San Marco Evangelista also holds a special historical detail: a Roman ash urn that was converted into a baptismal font. The vessel’s former purpose and its later use as a baptismal font are brought together in a single object. A nevèra is also located on the northern slope near the summit of Monte Lepre. This distinctive dry-stone shaft was used to collect snow in winter and use it in summer.

Menevavo and other traces of history

Menevavo is a multimedia open-air museum in Eremiti, a hamlet of Futani, dedicated to Francesco Chirico. Visitors can follow stations and places from the sailor’s life. Graphic panels, podcasts and video clips tell his story; the content is accessible via QR codes on the installed panels. Since digital content can be updated, this multimedia format is also part of what makes the museum distinctive.

Another historical reference dates back to 1247: Futani is first documented in a notarial deed from that year as a hamlet belonging to the state of Cuccaro Vetere. In the municipality of Futani, the cenobium dedicated to Santa Cecilia became an abbey in 1022.

Plan your journey and choose where to stay

Futani can be reached by public and private bus services to and from Naples, Salerno and Vallo della Lucania. Check current routes and timetables for your travel dates. Vallo della Lucania–Castelnuovo on the Naples–Reggio Calabria railway line is the main reference station for Futani; also check current train connections before travelling. This lets you plan your journey separately from your choice of excursions. Whether the Sentiero Sacro, the churches or Menevavo is the deciding factor depends on the focus you want for your stay in Futani.
