Laurito: Olive Groves, Churches and Mountain Trails
Accommodation in Laurito
Laurito is located in Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. The built-up area lies among centuries-old olive groves, while the surrounding territory extends from Mediterranean scrubland to the mountain zone. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Laurito, you can use your interests as a guide: local history, religious festival traditions or hikes through the landscape give the destination different points of focus.
Landscape between olive groves and the mountain zone
Olive groves define the surroundings of the built-up area. In the Laurito area, Mediterranean scrubland on the hills facing the Mingardo gives way to a landscape of olive groves and chestnut woods; beech forests are also found in the mountain zone. This sequence describes different landscape areas, not just the town center. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether you are most interested in the historic town center or in the variety of the surrounding area.
History and churches
Around the year 1000, Laurito was a castrum, meaning a fortified settlement or castle. Several churches bring different historical and architectural aspects of the town to life. Construction of the Chiesa di San Filippo d’Agira began in 1273; it dates from the 13th century. It has a Gothic chapel with frescoes decorating its walls and cross-vaulted ceiling. The church entrance is accessible to people with disabilities.
The Chiesa San Giovanni Battista represents a different architectural history. It dates from between the late 18th and early 19th centuries and is in the false Romanesque style. In 1948, it was rebuilt over an earlier church dating from around 1400. The dates therefore distinguish the present church building from its older predecessor.
Outside Laurito, in the Cupone area among fields, stands the Chiesa della Madonna del Cielo, which has existed since 1730. It is also associated with a local festival tradition: the Festa della Madonna del Cielo takes place on the second Sunday in September in the area of the same name. It includes a pilgrimage during which worshippers carry votive offerings, known as “cinte,” on their heads and then walk around the church three times. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the event date in advance.
Festival traditions and the Antico Mulino
The Festa della Madonna del Carmine is also associated with a procession. The statue of the Madonna is taken to the main church; the following day, it returns to its original chapel. Together with the pilgrimage to the Madonna del Cielo, this procession illustrates two different forms of religious tradition in Laurito: one involves carrying the cinte and circling the church three times, while the other follows the statue between the chapel and the main church.
The Antico Mulino complex is located on the Utria River. It has hosted exhibitions of agricultural tools and equipment, as well as photographs of Laurito through the years. There is an equipped barbecue area nearby, which is open to everyone free of charge. Here, a cultural stop and a practical option for an outdoor break sit side by side; the exhibitions are part of the complex’s history and are not necessarily part of a current program.
Two routes with different highlights
For hikers, the Itinerario delle Creste and the Itinerario delle Cime differ in their described routes and levels of difficulty. The Itinerario delle Creste follows the ridge between the Monte Fulgenti plateau at 1,006 meters and the Tempa della Castagna plateau at 1,360 meters. The Itinerario delle Cime, by contrast, focuses on a challenging route for experienced hikers. It connects the peaks of Monte Antilia at 1,316 meters, Tempa del Ciglio at 1,339 meters and Campanaro Giungoli at 1,448 meters, continuing to the Rotonda at 1,486 meters, the highest point in the municipality.
The information offers a concrete comparison: one route is defined by the ridge between two plateaus, while the other is specifically described as challenging and connects several peaks. This can help you take your interests and hiking experience into account when planning your trip, without treating the two routes as equivalent.
