Maiori – Beach, Lemon Trail and Culture
Accommodation in Maiori
If you’re looking for a hotel in Maiori, the focus of your trip can help you decide where to start: the coast, hiking trail, cultural history or local cuisine each bring out a different side of the town. You can prioritize the places and themes below according to your interests.
Coast and Lemon Trail
Maiori has the longest beach in the area. The Sentiero dei Limoni offers a different experience: it begins at the Collegiata di Santa Maria a Mare in Maiori and winds through cultivated lemon groves and diverse Mediterranean vegetation. In the past, the Formichelle used this trail—women who carried lemons in large baskets. The former work of the Formichelle is therefore also part of the Lemon Trail’s history.
A lemon tour along the Sentiero dei Limoni can be arranged on request. It includes information about processing lemons and a tasting of lemon-based products in the lemon grove. If you’d like to plan this experience, request the tour in advance.
One specific coastal destination is Spiaggia di Salicerchie, which can be reached by descending more than 160 steps behind the Torre Normanna. Torre Normanna is in the hamlet of Erchie and is one of Maiori’s best-known Saracen towers. This route information is a practical guide for planning a visit to the beach.
Churches, Fortress and Gardens
The Collegiata di Santa Maria a Mare was built by the Lombards in the 13th century. It houses sacred objects and paintings from the 15th century, and its crypt contains a museum of sacred art. As the starting point of the Sentiero dei Limoni, the Collegiata also connects Maiori’s cultural history with the hiking trail.
The Abbazia di Santa Maria dell’Olearia is set directly against a rock face. Castello di Thoro Plano dates back to the 9th century and stands above Maiori. Historically, it served as a communications outpost for the Republic of Amalfi. Remains of the former S. Sebastiano fortifications can also be seen in Maiori.
The Giardini di Palazzo Mezzacapo offer a place to relax among elegant, striking fountains. The Giardini Mezzacapo are landscaped with Mediterranean plants, flowers and trees, as well as artificial grottoes and watercourses; their layout is shaped like a Maltese cross. Art events, exhibitions, cultural events and musical performances are often held there. Alongside its historic buildings, Maiori’s gardens and events reveal another side of its culture.
Festivals and Local Specialties
The Festa patronale di Santa Maria a Mare is a traditional Ferragosto celebration. It culminates in a solemn procession through Maiori and fireworks over the sea. If you’re travelling specifically for the festival, check the event program dates.
The “Melanzana con la cioccolata,” a traditional dish from Maiori that has received De.Co. recognition, is associated with the patron saint’s festival. Other names are also part of the local food culture: “Zizze ’e monache” is the name used in Maiori for a delicate version of the “sospiri” pastry. The digestif “Concerto” is said to have originated between Maiori and Tramonti.
The main trip-planning options are quite different: beaches and coastal destinations, a trail through lemon groves with a tour available on request, and historic buildings, gardens and festival traditions. This lets you decide which aspects of Maiori you’d most like to shape your trip.
