Mercato San Severino combines a layered castle complex with churches, works of art and archaeological sites. Its cultural and historical heritage ranges from the construction phases of the Castello dei Sanseverino to the finds at Antica Rota. If you choose a destination for its historical landmarks, the town offers several distinct points of interest: castle architecture, sacred art, archaeological discoveries and the ways they are presented to visitors.

The Castello dei Sanseverino

The Castello dei Sanseverino features distinguishable Lombard, Norman, Swabian-Angevin and Aragonese construction phases. These different influences give the complex a layered building history that cannot be reduced to a single era. The circuit walls stretch for about two kilometres and are largely well preserved. Within the castle, Piazza d’Armi forms its central and oldest core. It was used for military events, and its small towers served as positions for siege engines. The castle thus offers a focus on both its architectural development and its historical military use.

Castle research and natural history at MIMU

The Ministruttura Museale, or MIMU for short, is housed in the Palazzo Comunale and was inaugurated in 2018. It is dedicated to presenting in greater depth the research and excavations at the Castello Medievale dei Sanseverino. MIMU also includes a natural history section devoted to the flora of the Parco del Castello dei Sanseverino. Its collection comprises more than 300 specimens of plants, seeds and essences from the Mediterranean maquis. MIMU therefore brings together archaeological research on the castle and a natural history perspective on the park.

Archaeological traces at Antica Rota

Antica Rota complements the castle’s history with archaeologically excavated remains. Excavations there uncovered a Roman building, as well as a cemetery and a church dating to the 6th century. The church was later converted into an early medieval parish church. An excavation campaign completed in 2024 also uncovered a mosaic dating to the 1st century AD. It is considered evidence of the existence of a grand villa. The remains thus include a Roman building, a cemetery and a church, as well as a mosaic whose significance lies not only in its date but also in its interpretation as evidence of the villa.

Churches, art and religious history

The earliest records of the Chiesa di San Giovanni in Parco date to 1412; a contemporary inscription confirms this date. The church also houses an altarpiece of the Virgin and Child, created in 1580 by the Neapolitan painter Fabrizio Santafede. The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie is first documented in 980 and was listed as a parish church in 1481 under the name “S. Maria de Foro S. Severini”. These two dates mark different records: the church’s early documentation and its later listing as a parish church under this name. The Convento di Sant’Antonio houses a sarcophagus made of the finest marble and crafted to an exceptional standard. It is borne by four winged figures symbolising faith, justice, temperance and fortitude. Together, these examples show different forms of the town’s religious and artistic heritage: historical records, painting and sculpture.
