Perdifumo: Cultural History and Routes in Cilento
Accommodation in Perdifumo
Perdifumo combines a rich architectural history with scenic viewpoints and walking routes. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, you can take your interests in culture and landscape into account when planning: the historic center is home to aristocratic palaces with elaborately carved stone doorways, while churches, monasteries and historic sites in the named localities reveal different eras.
Castles, Churches and Monasteries
In Vatolla, Castello Vargas-Machucha dates from the 16th century. Its paved courtyard features a 17th-century mascaron used as a fountain. The castle’s connection with the philosopher G. Battista Vico is also part of its history: Vico stayed there. Today, the castle houses a library with historical and critical texts about him, as well as texts on local history.
The parish church of Madonna delle Grazie in Vatolla dates back to the 11th century. Two fragments of a Roman sarcophagus from the 4th century AD are built into its facade. The Convento di Santa Maria della PietĂ was founded in 1619, making use of the older Chapel of della PietĂ . Another monastery, the Convento Santa Maria della Porziuncola, was established in 1635 and preserves 18th-century paintings as well as carefully crafted statues of saints. These buildings reveal different periods, from medieval origins to later works of art.
The Cenobio di Sant’Arcangelo is considered one of the oldest monastic settlements in Cilento. The Convento di Santa Maria del Carmine in Mercato Cilento was fortified in the first half of the 17th century to protect it against bandit attacks. Its history thus links monastic architecture with a specific defensive purpose. At the Chiesa di San Sisto Papa, the history spans from its construction in the 16th century to its rebuilding in 1962: a whirlwind had largely destroyed it in 1961. Inside are frescoes from the 1960s, a 17th-century holy water font, an 18th-century altar and a 17th-century statue of Our Lady of the Rosary.
Historic Traces in the Landscape
Individual structures outside the churches and monasteries also tell of earlier uses. At the entrance to Camella stands an ancient public fountain bearing the Altomare family coat of arms. Its inscription, dating from 1536, is partly legible. The watermill in Vatolla was built on an existing medieval structure. Pottery-making with local clay is also recorded in Perdifumo in the 12th century: kitchenware, tableware and storage vessels were made, and the activity is also mentioned for the following century.
On Punta della Carpinina is a fortified structure dating from the 4th century BC, built from Greek stone blocks laid in isodomic courses. It lies about one kilometer southwest of Perdifumo, on the boundary between the territories of Poseidonia and Elea, and belonged to Elea. Alongside the later churches and monasteries, it is another testament to the area’s ancient history.
Scenic Viewpoints and Routes
The Passeggiata Panoramica in Perdifumo is a 1.5-kilometer walking route with four viewpoints: Piazza Europa, Piazza Regina Margherita, Santa Sofia and L’Affacciatura. At the end, L’Affacciatura offers views of the Gulf of Salerno and Castellabate. Check local route information before setting out. Another way to explore the area on foot is the Cammino dei monaci: this trekking route runs from the Carpinina area to the Antenne area, passing the ruins of the Sant’Arcangelo monastery. The route is not secured; check the conditions before setting out.
