Petina: Churches, Mountain Trails and Wild Strawberries
Accommodation in Petina
Petina lies on the slopes of the Monti Alburni. Chestnut, oak and maple trees shape the landscape, while the historic centre, with its narrow lanes, steps and small arcades, invites you to explore on foot. In Petina, a compact village layout meets a wooded mountain landscape. Different interests can shape your travel plans: churches and rock sites, named trails, astronomy or local food.
Churches and rock sites in Petina
The Chiesa San Nicola di Bari can be dated through its building history. It dates from the 14th century and was enlarged in the 16th century; a further enlargement followed in 1736–1737. The stone portal, dating from 1510, is attributed to Francesco da Sicignano. The church’s origins, later enlargements and portal therefore represent different stages in its history.
The hermitage of Sant’Onofrio stands on a rocky outcrop at 361 metres above sea level. The Spirito Santo rock complex is built into the cliff on which the settlement of Petina lies, and remains a focus of popular devotion. Both sites add their own rock-related history to the area’s church architecture: the hermitage is defined by its position on the outcrop, while the Spirito Santo complex is built into the rock.
Landscape, astronomy and trails
On the Monti Alburni massif, the Osservatorio Astronomico Aresta stands at 1,169 metres in a large clearing surrounded by dense woodland. Public astronomy activities include guided sky observations using the observatory’s equipment. The observatory’s guides accompany visitors during the observations; advance reservations are required. As dates may change, check the current events calendar before making plans.
The two shorter trails described here are easy to distinguish by their destinations. The 800-metre Sentiero Carpineto connects the historic centre with the Vecchio Mulino del Vallone Sant’Onofrio. The 858-metre Sentiero Spirito Santo runs below the municipality of Petina and connects the historic centre with the Cappella di Santa Maria del Cedro. When choosing between the two routes, their different endpoints are therefore a useful point of comparison, alongside their lengths.
The Sentiero degli Alburni is on a different scale: this hiking trail is 19.4 kilometres long and passes through mid-mountain terrain in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. It is therefore quite different from the two shorter trails, whose descriptions focus on specific connections between the historic centre and a named destination.
Wild strawberries and local food
Traditional foods associated with Petina include sausages, Caciocavallo cheese, mushrooms and hand-baked bread. The Festa della Fragolina di Petina celebrates the local wild strawberry, a typical product grown at the foot of the Monti Alburni. The Festa della Fragolina e dei sapori degli Alburni brings together food, folklore and nature. Alongside historic sites and trails, local food culture and festival traditions are therefore also themes to explore during a stay in Petina.
