Praiano can be explored through a variety of themes: Marina di Praia is a popular seaside destination, while churches, walking trails, and festivals offer insights into architectural history and local traditions. When planning your trip, it helps to first choose the focus that interests you most. This lets you tailor your search for a hotel in Praiano to the type of stay you have in mind.

Marina di Praia and Coastal Trails

From Marina di Praia, short boat trips can take you to the nearby Grotte di Suppraiano and Grotta dell'Africana along the surrounding coast. If a boat trip is part of your plans, check in advance which excursions are available and when they run.

Above Marina di Praia, Torre a Mare stands on a promontory. The medieval watchtower was built to warn of Saracen invasions. The tower thus connects views of the coastal landscape with its historic purpose of warning of attacks.

The walking trails also vary in route and character. On the Passeggiata di Grado, a public staircase leads down to Torre di Grado and the sea. The Passeggiata di Terramare is short and steep, offering panoramic coastal views. The Passeggiata di San Domenico follows the steps of Via San Domenico. When comparing the trails, different features stand out: the descent to the tower and sea, the coastal views, or the route along the steps of Via San Domenico.

Churches, Architectural History, and Art

The Chiesa di San Luca is a Baroque parish church dating from 1588. It was restored in 1772 and stands on the site of an earlier building from 1123. One distinctive feature is the majolica dome, integrated directly into the apse. The majolica floor, dating from 1789, is decorated with flowers and birds; at its center, San Luca is depicted painting. Architectural history and craftsmanship are reflected here in different details: in the successive building phases as well as in the design of the dome and floor.

The Chiesa di San Gennaro is a Renaissance basilica with three naves and a Latin cross-shaped floor plan. Its dome is made of polychrome majolica. The floor plan and three naves describe the layout, while the dome, with its multicolored majolica design, adds a distinctive architectural accent.

The Chiesa San Giovanni was built around the 11th or 12th century and was once the town's main church. It preserves a majolica floor dating from 1790 and a pipe organ with a gallery dating from 1795; both are from the Neapolitan school. The church's historic role thus sits alongside two later furnishings.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria ad Castro lies on the slopes of Monte S. Angelo a tre Pizzi, at 364 meters above sea level, overlooking the Fontanella Valley. A large fresco is located in the apse vault of the left aisle. The building was constructed in 1430 under a papal concession. Praiano also has numerous votive chapels and small places of worship from different periods, decorated with frescoes or ceramics.

Festivals and When to Visit

The Festa di San Luca takes place on the first Sunday in July; the tradition has continued for more than three centuries. The Festa di San Gennaro in Praiano is celebrated on the first Sunday in May, as well as on September 19 and December 16. If one of these festivals is a key factor in your trip, check the program for the relevant year in advance.

The Luminaria di San Domenico takes place every year from August 1 to 4. Each evening, the people of Praiano decorate the forecourt of the Church of Santa Maria a Castro with 2,000 candles. I Suoni degli Dei features concerts in the forecourt of the Chiesa di Santa Maria a Castro on the Sentiero degli Dei. Check the announced dates for the concerts before your trip.

Also consider whether you are especially interested in the marina, the walking trails, or the churches and their history. These priorities can help you plan your stay in Praiano around the themes you would like to explore while you are there.
