Discover San Nicola
Accommodation in San Nicola
If you would like to get to know San Nicola, its cultural history and hiking offer different focal points: in Ogliara, ceramic craftsmanship and parish history take center stage; Monte Stella is a mountain hiking destination with specifically named waypoints and elevations.
Ceramic tradition in Ogliara
In the local area, the Fornaci De Martino are the only surviving example of traditional craft methods for ceramic production. Visitors can follow the ceramic-making cycle there, using bundles of fuel: from extraction in the pit to the stonemason cutting each individual tile. This brings to life a sequence of work stages that runs from the start of production to the finished tile.
The Museo Città Creativa was founded in 1997 as a project to revive the craft tradition of “cotto di Rufoli.” The “Via del Fuoco” walk includes a visit to the museum and the Fornaci De Martino. Those interested in ceramics can thus explore two different aspects of the subject: the history of reviving a local tradition and the individual stages of production.
Parish history and protected church
The present-day Church of Santa Maria e San Nicola di Ogliara dates back to the merger of two original parishes. At the beginning of the 19th century, the parish of San Nicola in Ogliara was permanently dissolved and merged with the parish of Santa Maria. The former church of the parish of San Nicola was located in the eastern part of the hillside hamlet of Ogliara.
The Church of Santa Maria e San Nicola di Ogliara is protected for its historical and cultural value. The protection is based on Regional Decree 1073 of July 7, 2011. The historical details give the present-day church a specific timeline: the former parish was dissolved at the beginning of the 19th century, while its protected status is based on a decree dating from 2011.
Hiking on Monte Stella
Monte Stella is a 953-meter-high mountain in the municipality of Salerno; its summit is a plateau. The mountain is accessible from Ogliara by road. The route on Monte Stella is classified as a hiking trail and includes a somewhat steep section—a useful detail when planning your excursion.
A hike in the 2026 CAI program leads from Ogliara via Pianello Sant’Angelo at 450 meters and the Santuario Madonna della Stella at 872 meters to the summit of Monte Stella at 953 meters. The elevations listed show the sequence of this specific route. This distinguishes it from a general description of the mountain: both the intermediate stops and their respective elevations are part of the itinerary.
Ogliara in Fiore and opening hours
“Ogliara in Fiore” is an annual tradition held on Corpus Christi. It includes a procession through the town and a ceremonial walk across a carpet of flowers. The Saturday program for 2026 was set to feature food and music groups entertaining visitors late into the night. These program items relate to the 2026 program, not to a permanent weekly offering.
The Museo Città Creativa is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Check the hours before your visit, as they may change. This helps you plan the timing of your museum visit, while the “Via del Fuoco” walk, with its two ceramic stops, offers a separate cultural focus.
