San Pietro Al Tanagro: Churches, Mills and Paths
Accommodation in San Pietro Al Tanagro
San Pietro Al Tanagro can be explored through its churches and chapels, as well as the landscape around the Setone. This gives visitors a range of ways to get to know the area: historic buildings and paths through a valley with wooded mountain slopes.
Churches and chapels tell the story of the town
The original Chiesa Madre di San Pietro Apostolo was already standing at the beginning of the 12th century. The town of San Pietro developed around it. The larger church building was later completely rebuilt, between 1815 and 1824. At the entrance, a pair of medieval lions flank the building. The figures come from San Marzano, a vanished settlement nearby. The church thus brings together different periods: its early importance to the town’s development, the 19th-century reconstruction and the medieval lions.
The Chiesa e Convento di Santa Maria del Piano also brings together different periods of construction. The church was already there in the 15th century; the monastery dates from the 17th century. It belongs to the Franciscan order. This is indicated by the Franciscan coat of arms carved into the arch of the entrance portal, showing the crossed arms of Francis and Jesus. The Cappella di San Giuseppe adds another layer, with a building dating from 1726 and a marble altar created in 1891.
Another landmark in the town’s history is the Cappella di San Giovanni. It was built in the 18th century as the church of the old Borgo La Torre. A document from the mid-19th century refers to it as San Giovanni nella Torre. If you are interested in historic names, this also shows how the building’s name changed over time.
The Santuario del SS Crocifisso was built in 1899 on Monte Ausiliatrice, at an altitude of about 750 metres. The mountain was subsequently named Monte del Crocifisso. The summit can only be reached on foot, along a rough path through steep, precipitous mountain terrain. The pilgrimages are also relevant to understanding the religious tradition over time: the feast of the SS Crocifisso is associated with occasions on the first Sunday in May and the third Sunday in September.
Valley, mills and different paths
The Parco dei Mulini covers about ten hectares in a small valley between wooded mountain slopes, cut through by a stream. In winter, the Setone forms rocky waterfalls there. The landscape is shaped not only by the stream: the mills also give the valley a historic connection. Two watermills are located in the park, in LocalitĂ Setone. One has been restored; both probably date from the period between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th.
The park is also home to the Percorso Vita, a path equipped with exercise stations and suitable for different age groups. It is quite different from the route to the summit of Monte del Crocifisso, where access is only on foot across rough terrain and steep, precipitous ground. If you are comparing paths as you plan your trip, these details offer a useful point of reference without suggesting that the two excursions are alike.
In LocalitĂ Difesa, a nature trail also follows the Setone stream. It passes natural waterfalls and the remains of old mills.
More historical details
The Fontana di Canali has a construction date—1850—as well as basins and historic inscriptions. Bonfires and a mass are central to the San Giuseppe festival: the fires are lit in the individual districts on the eve of the feast; the mass takes place on the morning of 19 March and is accompanied by the sale of onion plants. Together with the buildings and mills, these details offer further insight into the history and local traditions of San Pietro Al Tanagro.
