Discover Scorzo: Historic Routes and Churches
Accommodation in Scorzo
When visiting Scorzo, you can plan cultural and historical sites and a hike as separate highlights. Historic roads, churches, and the traditional role of Nares Lucanae shape the area’s history; a hiking route leads from the Campo d’Amore area over the Valico della Strettina to Scorzo.
Historic Routes and Nares Lucanae
The approximately 12-kilometer route near Scorzo remained in use during the Middle Ages under the name Via Regia. Later, the Bourbon road was built along the historic corridor. The Statale 19 delle Calabrie also runs through Scorzo, following the course of the Roman road for long stretches. These connections tell of different periods and uses of the routes, rather than a single historical name.
Nares Lucanae is described as a pass between the Monti Alburni and Serra Sant’Angelo. Archaeological studies identify Nares Lucanae, between the districts of Scorzo and Zuppino, as a station on the ancient Via Popilia. The Nares offered travelers places to stop, such as inns and guesthouses; Cicero and Garibaldi are said to have stopped there. For planning your trip, these are additional points of interest alongside the churches and hiking trail: you can focus on local history or set aside time for a hike.
Churches, Art, and Architectural History
In Contrada Casale, the Torre Campanaria di San Martino displays two fragments of an Augustan inscription depicting two women. Admission to the Torre is free. The Chiesa di San Matteo e Santa Margherita houses a statue of Sant’Antonio da Padova. The church also preserves an oil painting on canvas depicting Santa Maria degli Angeli and has an organ made in Cava de’ Tirreni in 1834.
The main entrance to the Chiesa di San Matteo e Santa Margherita is on Via Nazionale in Scorzo; admission is free. A service is scheduled for Sundays at 11:30 a.m. As service times may change, check the schedule before your visit. Another place of historical interest is the Cappella di San Vito Martire: it dates from 1689 and was restored and blessed in 1902. A borgo (historic village) is also preserved in Contrada Arestusa.
Hiking Route and Protected Landscape
The hiking route leads from the Campo d’Amore area over the Valico della Strettina and down to Scorzo. As an old route, it was used by local woodcutters to reach the Alburni plateau. Later sections pass through dense chestnut groves before the trail reaches Scorzo. If you are planning the hike, check trail conditions locally, as they can change.
Near Scorzo, the road from Corticelle in LocalitĂ Difesa leads to the Foce Sele-Tanagro Nature Reserve. The area includes numerous Sites of Community Importance and Special Protection Areas and helps preserve biodiversity. This distinguishes the local themes: the hiking route is a specific path to Scorzo, while the historic road connections tell of earlier routes. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether you want to focus your trip mainly on cultural and historical sites or on the hike.
